Chapter 1 - THE MAN OUTSIDE THE MATERNITY DOORS

“Seven centimeters.”

Nurse Kelly had been smiling when she said it.

Then someone appeared behind the glass doors, and the smile vanished from her face.

She lowered my chart, stepped into the hallway, and spoke briefly with a man in a dark jacket. I recognized Detective Reyes before he entered the room.

He had been assigned to my case for eighteen months.

He never visited without calling first.

Grant tightened his hand around mine.

“What happened?” I asked.

Reyes closed the door behind him.

“Hospital security removed a man from the restricted maternity entrance,” he said. “We’re confirming the camera footage, but he matches Silas Ward’s description.”

The contraction tightening around my body seemed to disappear beneath a colder pain.

“He found me?”

My voice barely came out.

My hospital chart listed me as Jane Doe. The maternity staff had been instructed not to confirm my presence to callers. My admission had been delayed until after dark, and Grant had left his usual phone at home.

Only five people knew which hospital we had chosen.

One was my husband.

Two were law enforcement.

The others were my brother Dale and his girlfriend, Hannah.

A shout echoed faintly from beyond the locked doors.

Grant moved between my bed and the hallway.

“He is not getting through.”

Another contraction struck. This one folded me forward, but fear had become larger than pain. Somewhere inside the hospital was the man who had once chased me through my brother’s backyard while carrying a machete.

That incident had happened nearly three years earlier.

Silas had stopped taking his prescribed medication without telling anyone and entered a severe psychiatric crisis. His diagnosis did not make him violent. Most people living with serious mental illness never harm anyone.

But Silas had threatened me.

He had blamed me for his hospitalizations.

And after his release, his fixation had continued through messages, gifts, anonymous accounts, and appearances outside places I had never told him about.

A protective order slowed him down.

It did not make him disappear.

Nurse Kelly returned and checked the monitor beside me.

“The doors are secured. Additional officers are downstairs.”

Reyes placed a blurred access sheet on the tray. His eyes stopped on one handwritten note.

“What is it?” Grant asked.

“Someone called the hospital earlier claiming to be Mara’s sister-in-law.”

“I don’t have a sister-in-law.”

My phone buzzed inside Grant’s pocket.

He removed it and looked at the message.

The color drained from his face.

It was from Dale.

Hannah admitted she spoke to Silas. She thought she could calm him down.

I stared at the screen.

“What did she tell him?”

A second message appeared.

Your address. Your due date. The hospital.

Outside, something struck the locked maternity doors.

Nurse Kelly turned sharply.

Grant leaned over me, shielding my view of the hallway.

But Detective Reyes was no longer watching the entrance.

He was staring at the access sheet.

“Hannah didn’t only tell him the hospital,” he said.

My breathing stopped.

“She gave him the name being used on your private admission.”

Cliffhanger: Hannah had leaked information that even most hospital employees did not know—which meant someone inside our family had been feeding her confidential details for weeks.
