Chapter 4 - The Video They Needed

At 10:40 that morning, Vanessa Cole from corporate communications called me.

“There’s a video spreading internally.”

“What video?”

“Hospital footage.”

My stomach tightened.

Someone had recorded me confronting Kenneth and Maya.

The clip began with me throwing evidence onto the bed.

It omitted the affair photographs.

It omitted Maya’s confession.

It omitted Kenneth demanding that I protect him.

Instead, the edited video showed an apparently enraged CFO standing over two injured patients while admitting she had replaced the bottle.

The caption circulating among board members described me as unstable, vindictive, and potentially dangerous.

They had what they wanted.

A public reaction.

Only I had not given it to them at the birthday party, office, or boardroom they had prepared.

I gave it to them in a hospital room after catching my husband with my brother’s wife.

“Who recorded it?” I asked.

“Security logs show Maya’s phone uploaded the original.”

Justin closed his eyes.

Even after the emergency, Maya had remembered to advance the plan.

At 11:15, Harrison circulated an emergency motion recommending my temporary suspension as CFO pending psychological and legal review.

He cited reputational risk.

Executive judgment.

Potential criminal exposure.

He did not mention his voice on Kenneth’s recorder.

He did not know we had it.

I attended the board meeting in person wearing the same black suit from the hospital.

Every director watched me enter.

Some looked concerned.

Some afraid.

Two avoided my eyes completely.

Harrison sat at the head of the table.

“This is not a trial,” he began. “We are here to protect the company.”

“That’s why I came.”

I placed the recorder in front of him.

His eyes dropped to it.

Then back to me.

“What is that?”

“Your voice.”

The boardroom doors opened.

Leona Park entered with forensic accountants, corporate counsel, and two independent directors Harrison had attempted to exclude from the emergency meeting.

I displayed the transfer map.

Nine million dollars stolen.

Four shell companies.

Medical records falsified.

Corporate debt acquired using company money.

Project Aurora documents sold to an unknown buyer.

Harrison tried to interrupt.

I played the recording.

His voice filled the room:

If she finds the missing money, we move to the incapacity plan.

No one spoke after that.

Harrison’s face remained impressively controlled.

Then he smiled.

“You have a recording of a sentence without context.”

“Then provide the context.”

He leaned back.

“I was trying to protect you from Kenneth.”

The lie was elegant.

Prepared.

He claimed he discovered Kenneth’s theft months earlier and pretended to cooperate so he could identify the outside buyer. He said the incapacity plan referred to protecting me if Kenneth tried to provoke a breakdown.

For a moment, several directors seemed uncertain.

That was Harrison’s talent.

He could pour poison into a crystal glass and make people admire the presentation.

Then Leona placed one final page on the screen.

A transfer from Harrison’s private foundation to Maya’s consulting company.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Dated six months before the affair began.

Justin stood.

“You paid my wife?”

Harrison’s smile disappeared.

Before he could answer, the boardroom phone rang.

Corporate security had intercepted Maya leaving the hospital through a service exit.

She was carrying a flash drive Kenneth had hidden inside her personal belongings.

The drive contained Project Aurora files.

But Maya was not trying to escape with them.

She was trying to deliver them to someone waiting outside.

When security showed us the surveillance image, I recognized the buyer.

It was the man Dr. Shaw had told me died three years earlier.

My father.
