Chapter 1 - The Call at 2:07 A.M.

“Mrs. Rollins, your husband and another woman have been admitted to the emergency department.”

The call arrived at exactly 2:07 in the morning.

I sat up in bed and looked at the empty space beside me.

Kenneth had told me he was spending the night in Colorado Springs finalizing a business deal.

“What happened?” I asked.

The nurse hesitated.

“There appears to have been an accident involving an industrial adhesive.”

I closed my eyes.

I knew exactly how it had happened.

Three days earlier, a storm canceled my flight to Salt Lake City. I returned to our Cherry Hills Village home without warning, carrying a box of gourmet caramel chocolates Kenneth loved.

Before I reached the bedroom, I heard laughter.

His laughter.

Then Maya’s.

Maya Rollins was my brother Justin’s wife.

She was supposedly visiting her mother in Boulder.

Kenneth was supposedly in a business meeting.

Instead, they were together in my bedroom.

I did not confront them.

I covered my mouth, backed away before they noticed me, and drove to a café in downtown Denver. I sat there for two hours while the coffee in front of me went cold.

I cried until there was nothing left but humiliation.

Then I remembered who I had been before marrying Kenneth.

Sabrina Rollins.

Chief Financial Officer of Rollins Global Enterprises.

A woman who had negotiated acquisitions across three continents before the age of thirty.

Not the apologetic wife Kenneth had spent five years creating.

That night, I searched the travel case he guarded obsessively. Inside were hotel confirmations, jewelry receipts, and a small unmarked bottle.

What I did next was reckless.

I emptied it and replaced the contents with industrial adhesive.

I did not imagine an emergency procedure.

I imagined exposure.

A humiliating inconvenience that would force their secret into daylight.

At the hospital, I would tell the truth about what I had done. I would accept whatever consequences followed.

But Kenneth and Maya had made choices too.

And theirs had lasted six months.

Before leaving for Saint Anthony Medical Center, I dressed in a black tailored suit, applied enough makeup to hide the evidence of crying, and placed a thick folder beneath my arm.

The folder contained photographs, hotel records, bank transfers, and an audio recording from the private investigator I had hired after discovering the affair.

When I pulled back the hospital curtain, Kenneth turned white.

Maya hid her face beneath the edge of a blue sheet.

Doctors and nurses moved around them with rigid professionalism, though the tension in the room was almost unbearable.

Kenneth tried first.

“Honey, this is all a misunderstanding.”

“Of course,” I replied. “Since when do you give private massages to my brother’s wife at two in the morning?”

Dr. Harris looked down at his chart.

Nurse Elena abruptly became fascinated by the IV stand.

I opened my folder and threw several photographs onto the bed.

Kenneth reached for them.

I struck his hand away with the folder.

“Don’t.”

His face hardened.

“You set us up.”

“Yes,” I said. “And I will answer for that.”

Then I placed one bank statement in front of him.

“But marrying me to steal from my family was the real trap.”

Maya began crying.

Kenneth accused her of seducing him.

She immediately pointed at him.

“He told me Sabrina would never find out!”

Twenty minutes later, my brother burst through the curtain, rain dripping from his dark suit.

When Justin saw his wife beside Kenneth, he lunged.

Two staff members stopped him before he reached the bed.

“That’s my wife!”

Maya swore Kenneth had pressured her.

Kenneth shouted that she had pursued him.

Six months of loyalty disappeared in less than sixty seconds.

Dr. Harris interrupted them.

“We need consent to proceed with the separation procedure.”

Because I remained Kenneth’s legal spouse and emergency contact, the form came to me.

I looked at him.

“I’ll sign after you give me the combination to your office safe.”

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Terror.

That was when I knew the safe contained more than evidence of an affair.

He whispered the numbers.

I wrote them down and signed the medical consent.

As the bed was wheeled toward the operating area, Kenneth twisted his head toward me.

“Sabrina, don’t open it.”

The doors closed.

Justin turned to me.

“What else do you know?”

I tightened my grip around the folder.

“Money is missing from the company.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Then my phone vibrated.

A security alert from our home.

Someone had entered Kenneth’s office using his private key.

May you like

And the hallway camera showed a woman walking toward the safe before I could reach it.

The woman was my fertility doctor.
