Chapter 4 - THE POLICY THAT MADE MY ABSENCE PROFITABLEEvelyn searched every insurance document linked to my estate.

Three months earlier, a new policy had been opened on my life.

Coverage: thirty-two million dollars.

I had authorized a routine estate-planning review but never approved that policy.

The application used my medical information, travel schedule, and electronic signature.

Primary beneficiary: a family continuity trust.

Trustee: Patricia Lane.

The policy included an accelerated disappearance clause for international travel.

If I vanished during a business trip and remained unreachable, Patricia could receive temporary estate funds before a final legal declaration.

The false European trip I announced had given her the exact opportunity her plan required.

She believed I was already traveling.

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

“She may act sooner than expected.”

We checked my travel profile.

Someone had created a real flight reservation under my name, checked in digitally, and used a private terminal account to create the appearance that I boarded.

My passport had remained inside the mansion.

Unless Patricia had taken it.

The office camera showed her opening another safe compartment and removing my passport, two corporate access tokens, and sealed medical powers of attorney.

She intended to establish that I left the country.

If I then “disappeared,” the children’s guardianship and insurance structures could activate together.

“Does she intend physical harm?” Thomas asked.

There was no evidence proving that.

We did not invent conclusions.

But she had designed a system that became financially useful if I were absent, incapacitated, or presumed missing.

That alone was dangerous.

Rosa played another recording.

Patricia spoke with an unknown man:

“Adrian’s driver will confirm he was taken to the airport.”

“And afterward?”

“He follows instructions or loses his contract.”

“Does Adrian return?”

A pause.

“That depends on whether he cooperates.”

My driver knew the business trip was staged.

But Patricia did not know he had helped me return.

If she discovered his role, she might move immediately.

As if summoned by the thought, the exterior camera showed the driver’s car entering the property.

Patricia rushed outside.

“Why are you back?” she demanded.

He answered too quietly for the microphone.

Her face changed.

Not into panic.

Into calculation.

She returned inside, climbed the stairs, and pulled a small suitcase from her closet.

She packed clothing for both girls.

Then she removed their passports.

On another screen, she opened the trust folder and placed the forged guardian papers inside her bag.

“She’s leaving with them,” I said.

Thomas reached for the security lockdown.

“Wait.”

Every second felt unbearable.

But we needed to know whom she contacted and where she intended to go.

Patricia called Nathan.

“The Europe story may have failed.”

“What happened?”

“The car came back. Adrian may still be nearby.”

“Bring the girls to the private airfield.”

“And Rosa?”

“Leave the evidence in her room.”

Patricia took jewelry and prescription bottles from the blue-room cabinet.

She entered Rosa’s bedroom and began planting them among her belongings.

The security system captured every movement.

Then she called the police.

“My fiancé is missing,” she said in a frightened voice. “His nanny may be involved. I just discovered stolen valuables in her room, and I’m afraid she has been manipulating his children.”

The performance was flawless.

If I had not been watching, I might have believed her.

She ended the call, wiped away tears that appeared on command, and walked toward the girls.

“We’re going on a surprise trip,” she told them.

Martina backed away.

“I want Daddy.”

“He already left.”

Daniela grabbed her sister’s hand.

Rosa stepped between Patricia and the front door.

“The girls are not going anywhere.”

Patricia’s voice became quiet.

“Move.”

“No.”

Patricia lifted her phone.

“The police are already coming for you.”

Then the mansion’s side alarm activated.

A private vehicle had entered using Miriam Whitmore’s family access code.

Miriam stepped out.

She had come to help Patricia take the children.

Cliffhanger: Patricia had not merely forged family support—she had convinced my late wife’s sister that removing the girls from my home was an act of rescue.
