I called my attorney next.
“I need emergency custody papers,” I told Marcus Chen the second he answered.
He didn’t respond right away.
Instead, he asked one question.
“Where were you last night?”
“Portland,” I said quickly. “Business meeting.”
The lie came so naturally I almost believed it myself.
But Marcus didn’t say a word after that. And something in the silence made me uneasy.
Then later that afternoon, my phone rang again.
Detective Holloway.
“Mr. Dalton,” he said calmly, “your credit card tells a different story.”
My stomach dropped.
“You weren’t in Portland.”
I said nothing.
“You checked into the Four Seasons in Seattle. Luxury suite. Champagne. Room service for two.”
Every word landed like a hammer.
“You spent the night with Vanessa Cole.”
There was no point denying it. The affair had lasted six months—six months of hotel rooms, stolen dinners, weekend lies, while Sarah stayed home with our baby and slept in fragments between feedings.
I had convinced myself she never knew.
The detective’s next sentence shattered that illusion.
