Chapter 8 - The Marriage Before the Marriage
Lena did not sleep after reading “jackpot.”
She had survived five years by believing at least the beginning had been real.
The first date at a cheap Italian restaurant.
Derek bringing soup when she had flu.
The proposal under Brooklyn Bridge.
Maybe love had later rotted.
Now she had to consider that he selected her.
Priya cautioned.
“One message is not complete motive.”
Correct.
They recovered more.
Derek to friend Matt:
Serra girl is actually funny.
Matt:
Still doing Kane thing?
Derek:
Maybe. Not sure she knows anything.
Matt:
Then why keep seeing her?
Derek:
Because I like her, idiot.
Mixed.
Two months later:
Derek:
Michael definitely her dad.
Matt:
Tell Kane?
Derek:
Not yet.
Why not?
Then:
Derek:
If I tell Kane, this stops being mine.
Mine.
Could refer relationship or leverage.
Later:
Derek:
She doesn’t know shit about Michael. I’m done digging.
Matt:
So normal girlfriend?
Derek:
Yeah.
For a time maybe he abandoned plan.
Then marriage years.
When did he resume?
After financial problems.
Derek lost job two years ago.
Gambling debt? Could be cliché. Better failed sports-bar investment and unpaid tax debt.
He needed money.
He remembered connection.
Contacted Kane employee.
Began tracking Michael.
So relationship may have become genuine after predatory start.
Then exploitation returned when desperate.
Again mixed truth.
This did not comfort Lena.
It meant Derek could love her and still repeatedly choose to use her.
Then court.
Derek’s criminal case split:
felony assault/domestic violence,
extortion-related federal case,
illegal information brokerage/privacy offenses.
Separate jurisdictions.
No magical one trial.
He eventually pleads assault? Let's delay.
Then other women found through his locator side work.
One had been harmed after address disclosure.
Another escaped ex before contact.
Prosecutors investigate unlawful data access.
The corrupt insurance employee, Dennis Park, charged separately with unauthorized database access and bribery.
No massive trafficking ring.
Just ugly cottage industry.
Then Bernard Kane.
Evidence shows he hired Derek to locate Michael but not necessarily threaten Lena.
However paying for protected personal data and knowing intended harassment could support charges.
Federal grand jury reviews.
Then old Moretti ledger implicates Kane in historical crimes perhaps statutes extended for certain racketeering? Could reopen broader case if continuing enterprise. We need not deep legal.
Kane’s current trucking company used shell payments to fund surveillance.
Strong current offenses.
He is indicted later on stalking/conspiracy/extortion-related charges.
Vincent?
Historical bribery exposed.
He cooperates under immunity? No, don't automatically. Counsel negotiates proffer.
If statute expired, no charge on old bribery; regulatory/business impacts.
More importantly, federal scrutiny finds his current legitimate businesses clean enough on this matter.
He still has criminal reputation/history, but not savior saint.
Then Lena’s recovery.
Arm surgery heals slowly.
Occupational therapy painful.
Grip weak.
She cannot carry diner trays.
Employer puts her on hostess/cashier shifts temporarily.
Customers stare at brace.
One asks:
“What happened?”
She says:
“I got hurt.”
No duty disclose.
Then tip jar.
Independence.
Michael offers trust money again.
She accepts $15,000 for medical/legal housing? Better maybe not, to avoid all money. But medical bills real. Insurance? Maybe her job insurance weak.
She chooses to accept documented gift after Priya reviews, not as debt.
Important:
Accepting help can be choice, not dependence.
Then relationship with Michael.
Weekly coffee.
At first all questions.
Then ordinary:
favorite movie,
food,
why he hates jazz.
Lena learns him as person, not vanished myth.
Anger remains.
Once he cancels coffee without calling because old fear triggered by unknown car following.
Lena responds:
“If you disappear again, don’t come back.”
He apologizes and does not repeat.
Boundary.
Then Vincent.
No contact for months.
Good.
One day he appears at diner? Could feel stalkery. Better sends through Camille asking if Lena consents to one conversation regarding father's case. She says yes.
They meet law office.
Vincent looks different in daylight.
Less mythical.
Older.
He says:
“You should know Kane’s lawyers are trying to claim Michael and I coordinated evidence.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Then:
“Do you need anything from me?”
“No.”
She smiles faintly.
“Good answer.”
Then asks why he remembered her name at diner.
“Michael showed me photographs years ago.”
“Was I a child?”
“Some.”
“That’s creepy.”
“Yes.”
He accepts.
Then:
“Why did you personally come to apartment? You already called police.”
Vincent pauses.
“Because I promised him.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
Then:
“Because I heard the door break over the phone.”
Human.
He came.
Then Lena asks:
“If police hadn’t arrived first, what would you have done to Derek?”
Vincent looks at her carefully.
“Whatever was necessary to stop him from reaching you.”
“Would you have hurt him?”
“If necessary.”
Not glamorized.
Then:
“Would you have killed him?”
“No.”
She studies.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Again.
Then he says:
“I have spent enough of my life confusing fear with respect.”
This hints aging/reform without whitewashing.
Then Lena:
“Derek did too.”
“Yes.”
Then Vincent says something surprising.
“Your father believes I saved you.”
“You made calls.”
“I know.”
“Building security saved time. Police stopped him. Doctors fixed my arm. I made call.”
Vincent nods.
“That is more accurate.”
Good.
Then he gives her black card back? Police maybe phone card evidence photographed. She still has original? It was in bathroom maybe recovered. Let's say evidence returned later.
He places replacement? No.
She says she no longer needs.
Then Michael’s extortion case reaches key point.
Derek’s friend Matt cooperates.
He has messages.
One from wedding night five years ago:
Derek:
She’s mine now. Serra will have to deal with me eventually.
Lena reads.
“Mine.”
Again.
Then next day:
Matt:
You sound like Kane.
Derek:
Shut up.
Pattern.
Then Lena realizes Derek’s violence and blackmail share same core:
Access as ownership.
Marriage as ownership.
Information as ownership.
Then plea offer.
Derek willing to plead assault and data crimes, but contests extortion intent.
Prosecutor asks Lena opinion but decision theirs.
She wants no maximum vengeance speech.
“I want record to say he broke my arm. I want no-contact. I want him unable to profit from locating people.”
Good.
Then one new evidence item changes extortion count.
Derek had drafted email to Kane:
If Serra doesn’t pay, wife gets hospitalized next.
Date:
Three days before he broke Lena’s arm.
He had threatened future injury.
Did he then break arm as part extortion? Could support.
But was assault planned as message or domestic rage? Maybe ambiguous.
Prosecutors can argue both motives.
Then Michael admits he received photo of Lena outside diner from Derek after refusing payment demand.

Cliffhanger: Three days before Derek broke Lena’s arm, he had sent Michael a surveillance photo of Lena walking home from work and warned that she could “get hospitalized next,” linking his private domestic violence directly to an extortion threat against the father she had not seen in thirteen years.
