Chapter 6 - The Death That Wasn’t Natural“Your father may not have died naturally.”

The sentence split Elena open in a place that had never healed.

Her father, Richard Hale, had died of sudden cardiac failure.

That was the official story.

A respected businessman. A private man. A grieving widower. Gone too quickly, but not suspiciously enough for the world to look closer.

Now his doctor—supposedly dead—was alive in an old video beside Vivian, Nora, and Greg.

Dr. Hart moved fast.

Within hours, subpoenas were pushed, old files were reopened, and a federal forensic review was launched into Richard Hale’s medical records. The dead doctor was identified under a new name living in Arizona. Nora Bell was taken into custody before dawn. Vivian vanished from the Connecticut house ten minutes before agents closed in.

And Greg?

Greg asked to speak.

Not with a lawyer.

With Elena.

Dr. Hart didn’t like it, but Elena said yes.

They brought Greg into an interview room. He was no longer polished. No tie. Hair loose. Eyes bloodshot. Fear had finally stripped the arrogance from his face, leaving behind only something uglier—need.

“You don’t understand her,” he said the moment Elena sat down. “Your mother destroys people when she thinks they belong to her.”

Elena said nothing.

Greg leaned forward, cuffs clinking softly.

“At first I thought it was just money. Then I realized she wanted control. Total control. She said you were your father’s favorite mistake because he let you think you were free.”

The words should have broken Elena.

Instead they made her colder.

“You killed Audrey?” she asked.

Greg looked down.

“She was never supposed to keep the baby.”

Elena felt nausea rise.

“That’s not an answer.”

His voice cracked for the first time.

“She threatened to leave. Vivian panicked. The medication—” He stopped, then shut his eyes. “I didn’t mean for Audrey to die.”

Elena stared at him in revulsion.

“No,” she said. “You only meant for her to lose her child and her money.”

Greg’s breathing sharpened.

“She said it would all be different with you.”

“Because of the trust?”

“Because of the bloodline.”

Those words echoed.

Bloodline.

Nursery.

Guardianship.

He looked up at her with desperate intensity.

“She’s not running because of the trust, Elena. She’s running because she failed to get you before the FBI moved in. If she can’t control you, she’ll go after the only thing she thinks truly belongs to her.”

Elena’s hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

Dr. Hart burst into the room at that exact moment.

“We have a problem.”

Greg laughed weakly.

“She’s gone.”

“No,” Dr. Hart said. “She made contact.”

He handed Elena a phone.

On the screen was a live image from a private maternity clinic two states away.

A nurse at the reception desk had just received a delivery envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only six words.

You were always carrying my heir.

Elena went still.

Dr. Hart continued.

“The clinic was one of three on your emergency labor list. Someone had access.”

Marianne, Nora, Greg, Vivian.

Too many doors had been open.

Too many hands had been inside her life.

Dr. Hart took back the phone and looked directly at her.

“We can move you tonight. New location. New identity. No one gets near you again.”

Elena rose slowly.

“No,” she said.

Dr. Hart frowned. “Elena—”

“She has spent years building a cage around me,” Elena said. “I’m done running from it.”

Greg stared at her.

Then something like dread crossed his face.

Because he recognized the tone.

It was the tone of a person who had finally stopped being prey.

Elena turned to Dr. Hart.

“I want every camera on. Every line tapped. Every route controlled.”

He held her gaze.

“You’re planning to draw her out.”

“Yes.”

“With what?”

Elena placed both hands over her belly and answered without hesitation.

May you like

“With the one thing she wants more than money.”

Chapter 7 begins on the night Elena publicly announces she’s going into labor—while knowing her mother is listening.
