Chapter 5 - The Photograph in the Archive BoxThe private archive box was held in a secure records vault beneath the old Hale & Morrison family office in Manhattan.

Dr. Hart insisted on accompanying Elena personally.

By the time the metal drawer slid open, the air itself felt heavy.

Inside were neatly arranged files, one sealed envelope, and a photograph lying face down on top as if someone had wanted it to be the first thing seen.

Elena turned it over.

Her fingers went numb.

Greg.

Younger by maybe seven or eight years, but unmistakably Greg.

Standing beside Vivian Hale on the steps of a hotel in Geneva.

The date stamped on the back was three years before Elena met him.

For a moment, Elena couldn’t make herself blink.

Dr. Hart took the photo from her gently.

“So he didn’t accidentally fall into your life,” he said.

“No,” Elena whispered. “He was placed there.”

Marianne covered her mouth.

The next file deepened the horror.

It contained private correspondence between Elena’s father and an investigator in Switzerland. Notes about offshore meetings. About a man named Gregory Carter being “introduced to Elena through controlled social contact.” About Vivian’s belief that Elena was “emotionally vulnerable enough to bind quickly if given the proper savior figure.”

Elena sat down hard.

Every first date.

Every flower.

Every act of concern.

Every carefully timed proposal.

It had all been engineered.

Greg had not married her and then betrayed her.

He had married her in order to betray her.

But that still wasn’t the worst part.

Inside the sealed envelope was a medical file on a woman Elena had never heard of:

Audrey Linwood. Age 28. Former fiancée of Gregory Carter. Deceased.

Cause of death: accidental overdose.

Attached to the file was a handwritten note from Elena’s father:

Vivian selected Gregory once before. Audrey died six months later under suspicious conditions while pregnant. If anything happens to Elena, this man is not merely a fraud—he is a pattern.

The room tilted.

Pregnant.

Another woman.

Dead.

The nursery. The guardianship. The psychiatric trap. The forged trust.

This had happened before.

Dr. Hart looked grim as he read.

“We’re reopening Audrey Linwood’s file.”

Marianne began to cry quietly.

“I should have told you years ago,” she said. “Your father begged me to stay close to you if anything ever seemed wrong. But when Vivian disappeared, I thought it had died with her. I thought I was protecting the estate by keeping silent.”

Elena didn’t answer.

Because she was staring at the final item in the box:

a flash drive labeled only with a handwritten date.

Dr. Hart plugged it into a secure laptop.

A video opened.

Vivian appeared on-screen, younger, colder, seated at a desk.

She was speaking to someone off-camera.

Her words made Elena’s blood stop.

“Greg follows instruction well,” Vivian said. “He gets attached to the women sometimes, but never enough to matter.”

The camera shifted.

Just enough.

Just enough to catch the reflection in a glass cabinet behind her.

The person sitting across from Vivian wasn’t just Greg.

It was also Nora.

And there was someone else in the room with them.

A man Elena had not expected to see again.

Dr. Hart leaned toward the screen.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “do you know that man?”

She did.

God help her, she did.

Because the third person in the room was the doctor who had treated her father in the weeks before he died.

And according to every official record…

May you like

that doctor was dead.

Chapter 6 begins when Dr. Hart says the words Elena never wanted to hear: “Your father may not have died naturally.”
