He Lied to You Too / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Son They Took First

His name was Michael.

At least that was what Caroline named him.

I stared at her across the federal conference table and thought I had reached limit of what a human mind could absorb in one night.

Apparently not.

“Son?”

Caroline pressed both palms together.

“I was pregnant when I came home from Germany.”

“No.”

“You were deployed again before I knew.”

I searched dates.

Emily was four? Wait user says Caroline died 21 years ago and Emily now32, so she was 11 then. Germany 28 years ago => Emily 4. Fine. Caroline could become pregnant in Germany with Richard, son born months later while Richard deployed maybe 1999. But why Richard doesn't know? She hid pregnancy? Hard if wife. Maybe she learned after separation due classified deployment and was abducted before telling. Let's make she discovered pregnancy after Richard deployed for 5 months, intended tell on return, but Mercer leverage began. She gave birth prematurely at private clinic under security pressure, told child died. Later learned he survived and was taken. Richard returned after supposed miscarriage? She told him miscarriage, unable to explain. This is major secret.

She had told me she miscarried at nineteen weeks.

I remembered.

I came home early.

She wouldn’t let me see hospital records.

She said she couldn’t bear talking.

I thought grief.

In reality, she had delivered a premature but viable boy at nearly twenty-eight weeks after complications? Timeline mismatch. Let's say she lied about gestational age due earlier deception. She had hidden pregnancy longer while under threat, then infant taken. Hmm.

Maybe better: she was pregnant but Mercer threatened, then delivered at 31 weeks. Richard was deployed; she told him baby died shortly after birth. This can happen. Richard knew son existed but thought died? User says "child Richard had never known existed" from prior cliff, but we can adjust: "never knew survived" not existed. Yet said "never known existed". Need continuity. Could say Caroline hid entire pregnancy due fear and told miscarriage earlier when she was actually still pregnant? Too convoluted. Let's change interpretation: "our son" means a child conceived from donated embryo? No.

Let's keep hidden pregnancy: Richard deployed before obvious, Caroline wore loose clothes on calls, told him hormonal issue? They had limited comms. 1998 era, plausible over months. She gave birth while he away. Then threat. She never told him. Painful but possible.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Mercer knew before I did that I had copied Lantern records. He told me if I involved you, you would be prosecuted for the forged authorizations.”

“So you hid a pregnancy?”

“I thought temporarily.”

Her voice broke.

“Michael was born six weeks early. They took him from hospital.”

“Who?”

“Mercer’s people.”

I stood abruptly.

“Where is he?”

“Alive.”

That was all I heard.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Twenty-seven years old now.

Maybe.

Caroline had spent decades trying trace him quietly.

David Monroe’s confession said infant was placed through private adoption network used by contractors to relocate dependents/witnesses? We need avoid implausible criminal network. Could be falsified private adoption through corrupt attorney. Fine.

Mercer arranged fraudulent adoption under another identity.

Why keep child alive?

Leverage against Caroline.

He told her he could find son anytime.

She complied.

Later lost trail.

David knew receiving family but did not include name in confession? Maybe he encoded location.

Then Emily became leverage when Caroline re-entered.

Thus attack connected.

Investigators decrypted drive Emily copied.

It contained old adoption payment.

Recipient:

Matthew and Susan Cole.

Location:

Pennsylvania.

Their adopted son:

Michael Cole.

Now twenty-seven.

Occupation:

paramedic.

Detective Mara Cole? Wait same surname potentially coincidence. Could be her younger brother? Too soap. Avoid. Use "Matthew and Susan Blake" and son Michael Blake.

He had no idea.

Federal investigators approached carefully.

Not dramatic father reveal immediately.

Identity testing needed.

Caroline had records.

DNA eventually confirmed Richard/Caroline parentage.

But before result, they discovered Michael had recently been contacted by someone claiming to represent biological family.

Who?

Victoria Monroe.

Why?

She wanted him to sign waiver relinquishing possible claims tied to old Lantern victim compensation? No direct inheritance. Perhaps to control witness. She told him his biological parents were criminals and paid him $50k for confidentiality? Need motive.

Victoria knew Michael’s identity from David files.

She approached because Emily's investigation risked exposing adoption fraud. She wanted Michael to sign affidavit saying adoption voluntary / no contact. He refused after feeling suspicious.

Then he started receiving threats.

He contacted local attorney.

Thus he might be a hidden witness too.

I did not meet him immediately.

I had no right to crash into twenty-seven-year-old man’s life demanding fatherhood.

That lesson mattered.

His parents, Matthew and Susan Blake, had adopted him believing everything legal.

They loved him.

Not villains.

Federal investigator explained there may be biological parents requesting contact.

Michael chose DNA test.

Three days.

Waiting worse than combat.

Meanwhile Emily improved.

Daniel was allowed monitored phone call after Emily requested.

He sounded broken.

“Em.”

She stared at ceiling.

“Did you know my mother was alive?”

“No.”

“Did you know about Michael?”

Long pause.

“Three weeks.”

She closed eyes.

“You knew I had a brother.”

“I was trying to verify.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Yes.

Then Daniel confessed:

He found adoption record on father’s drive.

He was trying locate Michael.

Victoria discovered.

She threatened.

“Why didn’t you trust me?”

“Because every time I showed you one piece, you dug for ten more.”

“That’s who I am.”

“I know.”

“And you married me knowing that.”

“Yes.”

Their marriage was damaged not necessarily ended.

Daniel had lied by omission to protect.

But he had also been under mother’s threat.

Still choice.

Emily said:

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

Daniel:

“I know.”

No begging.

Then I heard result.

99.999%.

Michael Blake was our son.

Caroline covered face.

I stared at paper.

Then federal agent said:

“He agreed to meet.”

Not both of us initially.

Me first.

Why me?

Michael said mother situation felt too complicated.

Fair.

I entered a small park conference room? Better neutral family services room.

Michael looked like me at twenty-seven.

Same jaw.

Same eyes.

But his posture belonged to another father.

Matthew Blake had raised him.

Michael stood.

“So you’re Colonel Hayes.”

“Richard is fine.”

He almost smiled.

“I looked you up.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For everything that happened before you had any say.”

He studied me.

“Did you know about me?”

“No.”

That mattered.

“Did she?”

“Yes.”

He looked away.

“My biological mother.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she find me?”

“She tried.”

“Not hard enough?”

I did not defend Caroline.

“I don’t know what hard enough means after twenty-seven years. You can ask her when and if you want.”

He nodded.

Then:

“My parents are my parents.”

“Absolutely.”

“No one is taking their place.”

“Never.”

His shoulders lowered.

Then he reached into backpack.

“I think Victoria Monroe came to me because she thought I had this.”

He pulled an old envelope.

His adoptive mother received it anonymously when he turned eighteen but never gave him until threats began? Need some tension. Better Susan had kept it because adoption agency instructed? Hmm. Let's say they got it years ago, didn't understand, gave him when contacted.

Inside was key.

Small brass safety-deposit key.

Tag:

LANTERN 4.

Michael said:

“Mrs. Monroe offered me two hundred thousand dollars for it.”

My blood chilled.

“What does it open?”

He shook head.

“No idea.”

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked.

Face changed.

“What?”

Message from unknown:

YOUR FATHER FINALLY FOUND YOU. NOW ASK HIM WHO SIGNED YOUR TRANSFER.

Attached scan.

Infant transfer order.

Signature:

Richard Hayes.

May you like

Mine.

Cliffhanger: The same forged signature that implicated Richard in Project Lantern had also been used to authorize the disappearance of his own son.
