Chapter 10 - The Thread Inside the Shirt

Forensics found it accidentally.
The shirt fragment with D.C.M. initials had a reinforced hem.
Inside that hem was a paper-thin RFID tag used by an upscale custom tailor for inventory and authentication.
The tag identified exact shirt.
Purchased for Daniel Monroe two years earlier.
Delivered to:
Victoria Monroe’s residence.
Not Daniel’s.
Why?
It had been ordered by Victoria as birthday gift.
Daniel wore once, then left it at her house after holiday dinner.
She kept it.
That proved access.
Then biological trace on fabric:
Daniel’s old skin cells unsurprising.
Victoria’s fibers/perfume.
And DNA from one attacker.
Evidence planting stronger.
But tag held timestamp scans? Tailor RFID passive, not location. No.
Still.
Then investigators found surveillance from Victoria’s garage showing security employee taking shirt hours before attack.
Case tightened.
Emily listened and said:
“I knew he didn’t do it.”
But then cried.
Because innocence of assault didn’t mean innocence in marriage.
Daniel came to hospital follow-up—Emily now home maybe. They met mediator/therapist.
He admitted affair? Wait no affair in this story. Daniel's issue is lies. Fine.
He explained father’s confession.
At deathbed David said:
“Your mother knows what we did to Hayes family.”
Daniel chose not tell Emily because he thought old crimes would destroy both families.
“I loved you,” he said.
Emily:
“You loved a version of me that didn't ask questions.”
He shook head.
“I was afraid of what questions would do.”
“To whom?”
“My mother. My father’s memory. The company. Us.”
“So everyone except me.”
He had no answer.
They remained separated.
Then corporate board appointed independent investigators.
Monroe Defense had legitimate current business; not all built on stolen funds. Initial capital partly tainted, but decades of operations created value. Civil settlements, penalties, governance reforms appropriate, not whole firm magically seized.
Daniel resigned executive role voluntarily during review.
That surprised Victoria when told in jail.
She sent him letter:
You are surrendering your father’s legacy to Hayes family.
Daniel returned unopened.
First boundary.
Then Caroline faced legal identity restoration.
Her death certificate rescinded through court.
She had lived under alias “Carol Reed” for years using fraudulently obtained identity? This could have legal consequences. We need not make her exempt. She cooperated, disclosed records, faced administrative/legal consequences for false documentation, potentially immunity/leniency due coercion and witness cooperation. Good.
She could not simply walk back into life consequence-free.
She also learned my survivor benefits/insurance after her death? I may have received life insurance. If she alive, legal/financial complications. Carrier review. Fraud? She didn't personally collect, but staged death contributed. Settlement needed. She accepted.
I told her:
“You can’t build truth while asking everyone to ignore your own false documents.”
She agreed.
Growth.
Then Denise faced her role:
financial facilitation in Lantern,
concealment,
false statements.
Old statute issues plus cooperation.
She repaid $72,000 adjusted? Maybe civil settlement.
No prison perhaps due old acts/cooperation.
But family consequences profound.
She lost relationship with me for time.
Emily refused contact initially.
Denise accepted.
Then General Mercer’s plea agreement.
He admitted:
conspiracy to falsify federal procurement records,
obstruction,
unlawful concealment of Caroline,
fraudulent role in Michael placement,
current obstruction linked to Lantern archive.
He denied authorizing Emily’s assault.
Evidence supported Victoria independent order.
Prosecutors did not overclaim.
He received sentence subject health; died? Could later, but not immediately.
He lost honors? Army could revoke certain post-service recognition administratively. No need specifics.
He sent me medal he once awarded.
I returned.
Not interested.
Then Emily’s scars began healing.
She refused cosmetic surgery initially.
“They’re evidence.”
Alan said:
“Evidence is photographed. You don't have to keep pain visible for court.”
She considered later scar-revision therapy after legal needs resolved.
Choice.
Then one night she asked:
“Dad, why didn’t Mom come home?”
I answered exactly:
“First because people threatened her. Later because she convinced herself staying gone would protect us.”
“Do you forgive her?”
“Not fully.”
“Do you want to?”
“I don’t know.”
Emily nodded.
“Me neither.”
She had met Caroline twice.
First meeting lasted eleven minutes.
Second forty.
No hug.
Caroline accepted.
Michael had met her four times and was more open, perhaps because he had no memories of being abandoned by her—only discovery.
Different children, different wounds.
Then Emily returned to work months later? Let's make she is maybe compliance counsel? User didn't specify profession. We know she discovered corporate records maybe worked at Monroe Defense? Could be corporate risk analyst. Let's establish now: Emily was senior compliance counsel at Monroe Defense. Good. She had credentials. She took leave.
She decided not return company.
Instead cooperated with independent monitor and later took role elsewhere.
Then detective Cole called.
One attacker, Victor Shaw, wanted revised statement.
He admitted Victoria ordered message specifically:
HE LIED TO YOU TOO.
Who “he”?
Not Daniel.
I froze.
“What?”
Victoria meant Richard.
She wanted Emily believe I had lied.
About what?
Michael.
But I did not know Michael.
Then why phrase?
Attacker said Victoria believed I had known Project Lantern was corrupt in 1998.
She genuinely thought I participated.
Maybe David and Mercer each told her different story.
Victoria attacked Emily based partly on a lie she herself believed.
This complicated motive.
Then interrogators confronted her with David confession proving I was framed.
Victoria read.
Started crying.
Not remorse only.
Her entire justification collapsed.
She had believed for decades I was hypocrite who knew.
Still no excuse.
But reason.
Then Victoria said:
“If Richard didn’t know… then Thomas lied to all of us.”
Yes.
May you like
The architect lied to accomplices too.
Cliffhanger: Mercer had built the conspiracy by giving each participant a different version of Richard’s role—ensuring nobody could compare stories without exposing him.
