Chapter 3 - Rachel’s Birthday Instruction
By midnight, Ethan had his first real answer.
Rachel had arranged the package herself.
Not after her death.
Before it.
Eighteen months earlier, while undergoing treatment for an aggressive cardiac condition, Rachel had met privately with attorney Caroline Shaw.
She created a series of scheduled family deliveries.
One for Ethan.
One for Lily.
One for an independent trustee.
Lily’s was specifically dated for her fourth birthday.
That explained how a dead woman could send a present.
It did not explain why Vanessa was terrified of it.
Caroline refused to discuss contents by phone.
But she confirmed one crucial fact:
“The package belongs to Lily. Nobody else had authority to remove it.”
“Did my parents know about it?”
“Rachel asked me not to notify them.”
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Michael?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Ethan sat straighter.
“Why?”
“Michael was one of two delivery witnesses.”
There was first payoff.
Michael had not randomly recorded party.
Rachel had instructed him eighteen months earlier to attend Lily’s fourth birthday and verify delivery.
The phone recording was deliberate.
“What was he supposed to verify?”
“That Lily received the package.”
“Why would Rachel think someone might stop her?”
Caroline would not answer without confirming Ethan’s authority.
But she gave him one sentence Rachel had written:
If Margaret or Arthur tries to interfere, record everything and do not argue with them.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Rachel had anticipated his parents.
Eighteen months before Arthur threw the glass.
Before Margaret tried pulling Ethan back.
Before Vanessa took package.
But Vanessa was not mentioned in instruction.
That mattered.
Maybe Rachel feared Margaret and Arthur for one reason, while Vanessa’s panic came from another.
At 12:41 a.m., Michael finally arrived at Ethan’s house.
He looked exhausted.
He handed Ethan full copy of recording stored on external drive.
“I made two backups.”
“Why didn’t you stop Vanessa when she took Lily into bathroom?”
Michael flinched.
“I didn’t know she had.”
“You were supposed to watch.”
“I was watching Arthur.”
Wrong person.
That failure would haunt him.
Ethan demanded complete timeline.
After Vanessa removed Rachel’s package, Lily followed her.
Margaret tried stop Lily.
Lily slipped away.
Vanessa went upstairs.
Lily followed several minutes later.
Michael thought Vanessa was hiding package.
He moved toward stairs.
Arthur blocked him.
They argued quietly.
That was captured.
Arthur said:
“You promised Rachel this family would be protected.”
Michael answered:
“I promised Rachel Lily would be.”
Two different definitions of family.
Then Lily disappeared.
Ethan, arriving late from a work call, eventually searched upstairs and found her behind bathroom toilet.
Michael had not known she was there.
Ethan’s anger toward him remained.
But the recording proved Michael did not participate in what happened inside bathroom.
“Where is package now?”
Michael hesitated.
“I think Vanessa hid it in Margaret’s bedroom.”
“Think?”
“I saw her come down without it.”
Ethan stood.
Michael stopped him.
“You can’t go back there yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Arthur knows what Rachel put inside.”
Ethan stared.
“You just told me you don’t know contents.”
“I don’t.”
“Then how does he?”
Michael swallowed.
“Because whatever Rachel sent Lily is connected to something your father did eleven years ago.”
Ethan’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Rachel’s cream package was open.
Contents removed.
