Chapter 1 - The Recording That Didn’t Stop

Ethan Bennett was already halfway across the front porch when he heard the crash behind him.

He did not turn immediately.

Lily was wrapped around his chest, her small face buried against his shoulder, both arms locked around his neck. Four years old, dressed in the pale-yellow star-patterned hoodie she had been so excited to wear to her birthday party, she was shaking hard enough that Ethan could feel every breath.

Only when she whispered, “Daddy...” did he glance back.

Through the open doorway, he saw the shattered glass scattered against the wall.

His father, Arthur Bennett, stood beside the birthday table with one arm still extended.

Margaret stared after Ethan.

Vanessa held a hand to her face.

Michael Reed stood completely motionless.

And on the table beside the half-cut birthday cake, a phone was still recording.

Its camera pointed directly at them.

Ethan had noticed the phone earlier but assumed someone was filming Lily’s party.

Now he saw something strange.

Michael was staring at it.

Not at Arthur.

Not at Lily’s bruised cheek.

At the phone.

Then Michael lunged across the table and grabbed it.

“Leave that alone,” Ethan snapped.

Michael froze.

For one second, their eyes met.

Michael looked frightened.

Not embarrassed.

Frightened.

Ethan backed toward his car without putting Lily down.

“We’re leaving.”

Margaret hurried onto the porch.

“Ethan, please. Don’t make this worse.”

He stared at her.

“Worse?”

His daughter had hidden behind a toilet.

Small round marks covered her arms.

Vanessa had dismissed them.

Margaret had tried to stop him from leaving.

Arthur had thrown a glass at him while he was carrying Lily.

And Margaret was worried about what Ethan might make worse.

Lily suddenly lifted her head.

“Daddy... my present.”

“We can get it later.”

She shook her head.

“No. The other one.”

Ethan paused.

“What other one?”

Her wet eyes moved toward the house.

“The present Vanessa took.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

It lasted less than a second.

But Ethan saw it.

“What present?” he asked.

Margaret answered too quickly.

“She’s confused.”

Lily immediately tightened her grip around Ethan.

“No.”

Her voice was tiny but certain.

“Mommy’s present.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Lily’s mother, Rachel, had died eighteen months earlier.

There could not be a birthday present from her.

Margaret stepped closer.

“Ethan, take Lily home. She’s frightened. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

“No.”

Ethan looked through the doorway.

Michael still held the recording phone.

“Give me that phone.”

Michael hesitated.

Then Arthur barked from inside:

“Michael, don’t.”

The entire room went silent.

Ethan looked at his father.

Arthur’s anger had disappeared.

In its place was fear.

Ethan slowly walked back toward the doorway, Lily still secure against his chest.

“Why shouldn’t he give it to me?”

Arthur said nothing.

Michael looked down at the screen.

Ethan saw the recording timer.

It read:

01:47:36.

Almost two hours.

The phone had not started recording when Arthur threw the glass.

It had been recording long before Ethan found Lily in the bathroom.

And according to Lily, Vanessa had taken something from her before Ethan ever walked through that door.

Something Lily believed had come from her dead mother.
