Chapter 6 - Madison Was Not the Villain Evelyn Wanted Her to Be
Evelyn hated Madison.
Then she didn’t know what to do with that hatred.
The affair had been real.
Madison had betrayed Elijah.
She had kissed Franklin in Evelyn’s home.
She had lied for months.
Those choices did not disappear.
But neither did the fact that Franklin had concealed from her that he was her biological father.
Madison’s attorney arranged a recorded interview with detectives.
She admitted relationship.
No minimizing.
It began four months before wedding, not three as she first told Elijah.
Franklin had been emotionally involved earlier.

F says if Evelyn learns Madison is his, marriage over and Elijah loses family.

He wants me to sign statement saying paternity test was wrong.
She refused.
Then final entries.
Franklin came to her house.
Threatened “everyone will lose everything.”
She planned police meeting.

If something happens, Charles has copies.
No direct “Franklin tampered brakes.”
Then most important:
14 months before death, Franklin demanded DNA retest.
Result again confirmed paternity.
He knew.
Fifteen years ago.
Undeniable if lab authenticated.
So when affair began, Franklin knew Madison was his daughter.
That changed criminal/legal landscape dramatically.
Madison was an adult, but consent obtained through concealment of a biological relationship could intersect with incest statutes and sexual-assault/deception laws depending jurisdiction. Prosecutors would determine charges.
Ethically, it was exploitation.
Then notebook included one last devastating line:
Franklin said if I tell Madison before she is eighteen, he will make sure Charles and I both go to prison for the account transfers.
Blackmail.
Charles participated in financial misconduct, giving Franklin leverage.
Rebecca stayed silent partly to protect Charles and herself.
Mixed culpability.
No saint.
Then Aisha asked:
“Why did Charles keep notebook?”
Maybe insurance.
Maybe conscience.
No answer.
Then one old letter from Charles to Franklin inside box:
I did what you asked. Madison believes Rebecca was confused. Do not contact her directly again.
Franklin replied handwritten:
