Chapter 3 - The Wedding Could Not Continue

Elijah canceled the wedding twenty-six minutes before the ceremony.

Not at the altar.

Not with a projector.

Not with two hundred guests watching Madison’s private life become entertainment.

He wanted to.

Evelyn could see it.

But Aisha convinced him.

“End the marriage before it starts. Preserve everything else.”

So Elijah went upstairs to the guest room where Madison was finishing her makeup.

Evelyn did not go.

Neither did Franklin.

Aisha waited in the hallway.

Elijah entered alone.

Madison turned in front of the mirror.

Her dress was still in its protective bag.

She wore the champagne slip beneath it.

For one second she smiled.

Then saw his face.

“What happened?”

He shut the door.

“I know about Dad.”

Her body went completely still.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“How?”

“Does it matter?”

Madison sat.

Elijah remained standing.

“How long?”

She started crying.

“Three months.”

His eyes closed.

Three.

Not the full hotel timeline perhaps.

“Were you sleeping with him?”

“Yes.”

The answer nearly broke him.

Then she said:

“But Elijah, I need you to understand—”

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”

He turned toward door.

Madison stood.

“He knows something about my mother.”

Elijah stopped.

“He told me Rebecca didn’t die the way I was told.”

Elijah slowly turned.

“What?”

“He said my father—Charles—lied to me. He said there were documents. He said he would tell me everything if I helped him fix financial problems first.”

“By sleeping with him?”

Madison covered her face.

“No. That started before the money.”

Honest and ugly.

Then:

“I thought he cared about me.”

Elijah looked sick.

“Did you know he might be your biological father?”

Madison lowered hands.

“What?”

The reaction was immediate.

Not rehearsed.

Elijah watched her face collapse.

“What did you say?”

He almost regretted telling her.

Almost.

“Mom’s sister found an old birth record.”

Madison shook head violently.

“No.”

“It lists Franklin.”

“No.”

“Madison—”

“No!”

She backed away until she struck vanity.

“My father is Charles Vale.”

“He adopted you.”

“No.”

Her breathing accelerated.

“I have his name. His family. He raised me.”

“That can all be true.”

“No.”

Then Madison looked toward hallway.

“Franklin said Rebecca cheated on Charles. He said someone else might have been my father.”

“Did he say himself?”

“Never.”

Elijah stared.

So Franklin may have been sexually involved with a woman he knew could be his biological daughter while withholding that fact from her.

Or the birth certificate could be false.

Either way ceremony was over.

Elijah pulled ring from his pocket.

“I’m canceling.”

Madison’s face crumpled.

“Please don’t do this in front of everyone.”

“I’m not.”

She stared.

He surprised himself too.

“I’m not protecting you,” he said. “I’m protecting myself from becoming him.”

Then he left.

Within minutes the wedding coordinator announced a family emergency.

Guests were asked to remain for refreshments while families handled private matter.

Rumors erupted.

Franklin demanded answers.

“Where is Elijah?”

Evelyn looked at husband.

“In a room where nobody is lying to him.”

Franklin’s face changed.

“You know.”

“Yes.”

He glanced at Aisha.

Then at black file.

The man who had spent twenty-five years presenting himself as calm became very careful.

“What exactly do you think you know?”

Evelyn heard lawyer in him.

Not husband.

She said:

“I know enough not to discuss this without counsel.”

Franklin smiled faintly.

“Your sister has poisoned you before.”

Aisha laughed once.

“Hello, Franklin.”

Then Madison came downstairs.

Mascara streaked.

She looked directly at Franklin.

“Am I your daughter?”

Everything stopped.

Franklin’s face emptied.

Evelyn watched.

He did not say no.

That mattered.

Madison took one step closer.

“Am I?”

Franklin whispered:

“Not here.”

Madison screamed:

“Answer me!”

Guests down corridor heard.

Several turned.

A wedding photographer lowered camera.

Franklin grabbed Madison’s arm.

Aisha immediately moved.

“Take your hand off her.”

He released.

Then Madison said:

“You told me you loved me.”

Evelyn nearly collapsed.

Franklin looked at her with something like fury.

“Madison, stop.”

“You said after the wedding you’d tell me who my father was.”

Elijah had returned.

He heard.

So did several guests.

The secret was becoming public anyway.

Then Franklin noticed two uniformed officers entering lobby.

Not because anyone had called about affair.

Aisha had contacted a former colleague before arriving and provided enough information about potential financial fraud and Rebecca’s old report for detectives to request a voluntary conversation and begin preservation steps.

No arrest yet.

The officers were there initially because venue staff had called after hearing shouting and observing Franklin grab Madison.

But one officer recognized Aisha.

She quietly identified herself, summarized suspected financial/document issues, and asked for detective supervisor.

Franklin saw exchange.

His composure cracked.

“You had no right to involve police.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Rebecca did first.”

He went pale.

Fifteen years.

One name.

May you like

That was what finally frightened him.

Cliffhanger: Franklin barely reacted when the wedding was canceled or when Madison demanded to know whether he was her father—but the moment Evelyn mentioned Rebecca’s attempt to contact police before her death, he looked genuinely terrified.
