Chapter 6 - why I let the gala happen

People later asked why I attended the gala at all.

Why I wore the ivory gown.

Why I stood beneath Vale chandeliers smiling for cameras while carrying enough evidence to burn the family down.

The answer was simple: because Adrian needed witnesses almost as much as I did.

He had no idea I was close to exposing him. But he had begun to suspect I knew more than he wanted. The surveillance intensified. His assistants “accidentally” deleted my files. A private doctor tried to pressure me into signing anxiety-treatment paperwork. Even the penthouse security team rotated to men I’d never seen before.

Then came the invitation to the Legacy Gala.

Five hundred donors. Board members. Investors. Politicians. Journalists. Half the people Adrian needed to impress, and the other half he needed to keep quiet.

That was the safest place in Manhattan for him to believe he could control me.

So I let him.

I wore his family diamonds and let Celeste introduce me as a symbol of “resilience and gratitude.” I thanked people for supporting the Vale Foundation. I stood near the ballroom screens and watched Adrian scan the room every few minutes like a king checking the obedience of his court.

He wasn’t worried about scandal.

He was worried about timing.

Because earlier that afternoon, I’d mentioned, just once, that I found something “interesting” in the old tower files.

His fingers tightened around his champagne glass so hard I saw the tendons strain.

He smiled anyway. Asked whether I’d misunderstood the paperwork. Suggested we speak privately after the speeches.

That was the moment I knew he would move that night.

Not later.

Not tomorrow.

That night.

So before the dinner service began, I sent one scheduled message from a secondary phone hidden in the powder room vent.

To a federal investigator who had been waiting three weeks for confirmation.

To a city safety auditor with sealed copies of the altered load reports.

And to one last recipient Adrian had completely forgotten about:

the doorman from Vale Crest Tower, who had seen my father arguing with Julian the night before he died.

At 10:12 p.m., Adrian touched my elbow and whispered that the skyline looked beautiful from the balcony.

I smiled.

And went with him.

Because by then the balcony cameras were already recording.

And below the penthouse, someone unexpected had just arrived in the service elevator.
