Chapter 13 - The other Whitmore heir

Rebecca Whitmore had disappeared from her family twenty years earlier.

Adrian believed she was dead.

She wasn't.

She had spent years investigating Walter.

Unlike Adrian, Rebecca didn't want courts.

She wanted revenge.

She became our nanny specifically to observe the Mercer family.

When she discovered Louisa might be Adrian's biological daughter, she installed redundancies into my security system.

The camera I'd thought was mine?

Rebecca replaced it.

She'd been watching.

She knew Lydia's plan.

And instead of stopping it…

She allowed it.

Why?

Because she needed me furious enough to leave Elmer and expose Walter.

I found her before police did.

“YOU LET THEM HURT HER.”

Rebecca didn't flinch.

“I didn't know Lydia would put her outside.”

“You knew about the shaving.”

“Yes.”

“She is three!”

“I needed evidence.”

That sentence erased whatever sympathy I might have had.

Everyone claimed to protect Louisa.

My mother.

Elmer.

Adrian.

Rebecca.

Each had made decisions for her without consent.

Rebecca produced a drive.

Years of evidence against Walter.

Enough to connect financial crimes, intimidation, fertility misconduct and potential obstruction surrounding Harrison's death.

“Why give it to me?”

“Because you can finish this.”

“No.”

She seemed confused.

I called the detective.

Rebecca realized.

“You're turning me in?”

“You watched my daughter suffer because it benefited your plan.”

“I was trying to destroy Walter!”

“And you became like him.”

Police arrived.

As they took Rebecca away, she laughed bitterly.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“Walter isn't the person who stole Lydia's bracelet from Louisa's backpack.”

I froze.

“Heather planted it.”

“Yes.”

“Walter removed it.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

May you like

Rebecca smiled.

“Watch three minutes further.”
