Chapter 3 - The Security Chief at the Door

Brendan stood up so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.
“What the hell is this?”
The man at the doorway didn’t even look at him.
He was in his mid-forties, broad-shouldered, immaculately dressed, with the controlled bearing of someone who had spent his life entering rooms only when something serious had already happened.
His name was Adrian Cole, and he was the head of corporate security for Vale Strategic Holdings.
Cassidy knew him well.
The Morrisons did not know him at all.
Adrian stepped fully into the room and handed a towel to one of the female staff members standing behind him.
“Please assist Mrs. Vale,” he said quietly.
The staff woman approached Cassidy at once, far more respectfully than anyone else had treated her all night.
Jessica looked confused.
“Why is he calling you that?”
Cassidy took the towel, but she did not wipe her face yet.
She wanted them to see the water still dripping from her hair.
Wanted them to sit with what they had done before the room changed shape beneath them.
Adrian opened the folder.
“By authority of the controlling beneficiary of Vale Strategic Holdings, emergency governance procedures are now in effect over Morrison Hospitality and all associated residential, transport, and executive-access assets.”
Diana gave a sharp little laugh.
“This is absurd. Brendan, say something.”
Brendan took one step forward.
“You can’t just walk into my mother’s house and start making announcements.”
Adrian finally turned toward him.
“Correction,” he said. “This residence is listed as a corporate-protected executive asset under Morrison Hospitality. Morrison Hospitality is majority-controlled by Vale Strategic Holdings. Access authority has been transferred effective immediately.”
Silence struck the room so hard it became a sound in itself.
Jessica’s face emptied first.
Then Diana’s.
Brendan stared.
“No,” he said.
Adrian continued as if Brendan hadn’t spoken.
“Mr. Brendan Morrison, your executive credentials have been temporarily suspended pending conduct review. Mrs. Diana Morrison, household charging privileges and property staff authority have been suspended as of 8:14 p.m. Miss Jessica—”
Jessica straightened.
“—you are not an authorized occupant.”
Her lips parted.
Diana slammed her glass down.
“This is ridiculous. Who approved this?”
Adrian looked toward Cassidy.
No one followed his gaze at first.
Then Brendan did.
Water still clung to Cassidy’s hair. Her dress was plastered against her skin. Her face looked pale from shock and cold.
But her eyes were steady now.
Steadier than anyone else’s.
Brendan’s voice came out hollow.
“Cassidy… what did you do?”
She lifted the towel slowly and touched it to her cheek.
Then she looked around the long, gleaming table.
At Brendan.
At Jessica.
At Diana.
At the guests who had sat and watched.
“I didn’t do anything tonight,” she said quietly. “You did.”
Jessica gave a nervous laugh.
“No. Sorry. No. This is some kind of stunt.”
Cassidy turned to her.
“You thought I came here to beg for a place in this family.”
Jessica’s face tightened.
Cassidy’s voice remained calm.

“I came to find out whether any of you still deserved to keep yours.”
No one laughed after that.
