Chapter 3 - Vanessa Wasn't His Secretary

Vanessa Reed had never technically been Adrian's secretary.

That was simply what employees called her because she controlled his calendar, traveled with him, filtered his calls, and rarely left his side.

Her actual title was Executive Strategic Coordinator.

She joined Valeon three years earlier.

Before that?

Almost nothing.

One employer.

A boutique consulting firm in Delaware.

Closed.

Before that, graduate school.

Except the university had no record of her degree.

Her employment verification had been approved internally.

By whom?

Adrian.

He looked stunned when Dad showed him.

“I checked her references.”

“No,” I said. “HR checked references she provided.”

“They were legitimate.”

“They answered the phone.”

Not the same thing.

The investigation deepened overnight.

Vanessa's original surname wasn't Reed.

It was Mercer.

Vanessa Mercer.

That name meant nothing to Adrian.

It meant something to Samuel.

Dad removed his glasses.

“Thomas Mercer.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

Dad remained silent long enough to concern me.

Then:

“My first business partner.”

Valeon did not begin as Valeon Technologies.

Forty-three years earlier, Samuel Vale and Thomas Mercer founded a tiny electronics company in a rented warehouse.

Mercer-Vale Systems.

Thomas designed hardware.

Samuel raised money and sold contracts.

Seven years later, Thomas left.

Official history said strategic disagreement.

Reality:

Thomas accused Samuel of stealing his patent.

I stared at my father.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Too fast.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“I didn't steal it.”

“What did you do?”

“I let him believe I had.”

Why?

Thomas had developed a power-management system while working at the company.

Legally, the patent belonged to Mercer-Vale under his employment agreement.

Thomas believed it should belong personally to him.

Samuel refused.

They fought.

Thomas left.

Samuel bought his remaining equity for $600,000.

Three years later, that patent became foundational to a government contract that transformed Valeon.

Thomas spent the rest of his career believing Samuel cheated him out of hundreds of millions.

Was Vanessa his daughter?

Granddaughter.

Thomas Mercer died twelve years earlier.

Vanessa was his daughter's child.

Why join Valeon under another surname?

Revenge seemed obvious.

Too obvious.

Then Adrian interrupted.

“What does any of this have to do with the board vote?”

Good question.

Vanessa could have forged his approval.

But why make Adrian CEO?

If she hated Valeon, why elevate him?

I looked at my husband.

Maybe she wasn't using Adrian to destroy Valeon.

Maybe she needed him controlling it.

Then my phone received an alert from the forensic team.

Vanessa had attempted to remotely delete one folder before surrendering her laptop.

Recovery succeeded.

Folder:

PROJECT CROWN.

Inside were twelve documents.

The first was Adrian's CEO strategy.

The second contained confidential board profiles.

The third was about me.

CLAIRE VALE CROSS.

Twenty-seven pages.

Daily routine.

Professional history.

Trust interests.

Marriage.

Financial permissions.

Relationship with Samuel.

Even photographs of me entering my father's private office.

Vanessa had not merely been sleeping with my husband.

She had been studying me.

Then we opened the final document.

Title:

SUCCESSION AFTER SAMUEL.

Three names.

Adrian Cross.

Vanessa Reed.

Claire Vale.

Beside Adrian:

TEMPORARY.

Beside me:

PRIMARY OBSTACLE.

May you like

And beside Vanessa:

CONTROL.
