Chapter 7 - The Blue File

“Anna will know where.”

My father had overestimated me.

I searched memories.

Blue file.

Childhood.

Office.

College.

Nothing.

Mom watched me panic.

“What did your father associate with you?”

“Books.”

“Boston.”

“Birds.”

Annie-Bird.

Dad teased me for organizing everything by color when I was young.

Blue was school records?

Then I remembered.

At seventeen, I hid college acceptance letters inside Dad’s blue atlas because I was afraid he would insist I attend nearby.

When he found them, he said:

“If you ever need to hide something from family, apparently atlas is your vault.”

The old world atlas still sat in library.

We opened.

Inside back cover:

a key.

Again.

Dad and keys.

This one labeled STORAGE 214.

A climate-controlled document storage facility near Hartford.

Dad had rented unit under trust name.

With counsel and police authorization? Unit belonged estate; executor maybe Mom. We accessed properly.

Inside:

blue metal filing cabinet.

Files.

Michael.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Copies of JR Recovery invoices.

And personal letters.

The “blue file” did not prove Michael killed anyone.

It proved something else.

He had been siphoning money from company for years.

Not for luxury.

Not entirely.

To cover gambling? Common trope. Could be speculative business losses. Better: he invested in failed real-estate projects without board approval and borrowed company money disguised as vendor advances.

Total:

$1.7 million.

He planned to repay after a development deal closed.

It didn’t.

Jonathan discovered.

Blackmailed him.

That was why Michael paid JR Recovery.

Jonathan threatened to expose unauthorized withdrawals.

Michael’s fear of losing company position led him deeper.

Then Dad found out.

His emails to Michael:

Tell Anna and board now. We can correct it.

Michael:

You will destroy me.

Dad:

No. Concealment will.

Michael:

You always wanted Anna back in company.

Dad:

This has nothing to do with Anna.

Michael:

Everything has to do with Anna because she gets to leave and still inherit half.

There.

Resentment.

I left family business.

Built separate life.

Michael stayed, felt burdened, believed inheritance should reward proximity.

Then Celeste’s emails.

She discovered shortfall after engagement discussions.

She told Michael:

Fix this before my family sees due diligence.

Her concern about marriage was partly financial transparency.

Reasonable.

Then she crossed line.

Celeste:

If Eleanor signs management trust, you can consolidate control and refinance without Anna interfering.

Michael:

Mom won’t.

Celeste:

Then her capacity becomes relevant.

Michael:

Don’t.

Celeste:

Miriam already thinks she’s slipping.

There.

Celeste pushed incapacity strategy.

Michael initially hesitated.

Then accepted.

Again, not single mastermind.

Then Miriam invoices.

Messages:

Miriam to Michael:

Eleanor’s grief and sleep deprivation are causing episodic confusion. Do not overinterpret.

That was early.

Later:

Michael:

I need written opinion.

Miriam:

Not without formal evaluation.

Celeste:

We can arrange specialist.

Then after payments:

Miriam:

I can document observed impairment but not diagnose dementia conclusively.

Yet her later affidavit said progressive deterioration.

Pressure altered language.

Was she bribed? Payments from company increased after she became “executive family health consultant.”

Could be conflict.

Then medications.

Michael messages:

Mom refuses lorazepam.

Miriam:

Then do not force it.

Important.

Celeste:

She needs sleep before Henley evaluation.

Miriam:

Absolutely not before cognitive assessment.

So who gave Mom medication before evaluation?

Michael?

Teresa saw him crush pills months earlier.

Could have been different date.

Then text:

Celeste to Michael:

Did she finish yogurt?

Michael:

Half.

Celeste:

Enough.

There.

My stomach turned.

No specific drug named.

But timing:

night before Dr. Henley video evaluation.

Then Michael:

I hate this.

Celeste:

You hate losing company more.

He participated knowingly in giving something?

Need establish. Pharmacy lorazepam was Mom's prescription, picked up by Michael. If he administered prescribed medication without consent to impair assessment, serious.

Then another:

Michael:

Miriam says no more.

Celeste:

Miriam doesn’t need to know.

So Miriam may not know some administration.

Her role remains doctor who prescribed questionably, shared records, exaggerated later, but perhaps not intentional poisoning.

Then blue file contained video from hallway.

Celeste crushing a pill into yogurt?

Dad had camera outside office.

Footage showed her handling tablet, Michael standing nearby.

No sound.

Date matches evaluation eve.

This was strong.

Then I called Michael through attorneys? Better no direct. His lawyer received disclosure through investigators.

He requested proffer.

Like others.

He began cooperating.

Maybe because Jonathan was bigger threat.

His account:

He had unauthorized company withdrawals.

Jonathan blackmailed.

Celeste helped hide.

He pressured Dad for voting control.

He accepted plan to make Mom look less capable.

He gave her lorazepam once before specialist call after Celeste said Miriam prescribed for anxiety.

“Did Eleanor consent?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She would refuse.”

There.

“Did you intend to make her fail cognitive evaluation?”

Long silence.

“Yes.”

That was devastating.

“Did you threaten Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you intend his death?”

“No.”

“Did Celeste?”

“I don’t know.”

“What happened night he died?”

Michael said after recorded argument he left at 3:18 because Dad ordered him out.

Jonathan left later.

Celeste stayed to argue.

Miriam stayed because Dad’s pulse was elevated.

Michael drove around block.

Miriam called him after Dad collapsed.

He returned.

Jonathan had already returned.

“Why delay ambulance?”

“Jonathan said Dad was dead and calling immediately would bring police because of argument.”

“What did you do?”

“I called anyway.”

EMS log call from Michael at 3:44 maybe. So 5 minutes after camera cut.

Could be.

Then:

“Did you remove security camera?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To hide argument.”

Obstruction.

Not necessarily murder.

“Where is original recorder?”

“I destroyed local unit.”

But Teresa had cloud backup.

Then:

“Did you tell Anna Mom had dementia?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know that was false?”

“I thought she was declining.”

“And after independent evaluation?”

“I didn’t allow one.”

There.

Then investigators asked about Jonathan’s location.

Michael provided last address.

Rhode Island marina warehouse.

Police found abandoned office.

Inside:

documents,

cash,

fake identities,

and one audio recorder.

On recorder, Jonathan speaking to someone days before engagement party.

“If Eleanor signs, Michael takes fall, Celeste gets marriage, and I get my shares.”

Other voice:

“And Anna?”

Jonathan laughed.

“Anna still thinks her mother has dementia.”

Then other person said:

“Not after birthday card.”

Teresa?

No.

Female voice.

Older.

May you like

We enhanced? No need identify via magic. Michael recognized.

“Miriam.”
