Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Attended the Funeral

His name was Julian Vale.

Half-brother.

Claire’s mother had him before marrying Claire’s father.

He was raised by relatives after a custody dispute.

Claire rarely spoke about him.

Alexander knew because Julian had contacted him privately during Claire’s illness.

Victoria knew because she had seen him at the funeral.

Ethan had seen him too.

He simply had not known who he was.

A quiet man standing beneath an oak tree beyond the family.

Ethan remembered Claire looking toward that same man once from her hospital window.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

Alexander answered carefully.

“You'll have to decide that after you know what happened between them.”

Julian had served six years in federal prison for financial fraud.

The case involved forged estate documents.

That looked devastating.

Too devastating.

Ethan kept digging.

Julian’s conviction was real.

But the scheme he participated in had not involved Claire.

After release, he rebuilt his life under another surname.

Claire reconnected with him secretly.

Why?

The notebook answered.

Julian knows how wills are falsified because he once falsified them. That is precisely why I asked him to examine mine.

Not conspirator.

Investigator.

Another apparent villain shifted.

Julian had discovered irregularities in Claire’s estate documents.

Pages substituted.

Metadata altered.

Witness signatures reused.

He told Claire someone with access to the family’s legal network was manipulating drafts before execution.

He could not identify who.

Claire asked him to help create a hidden authentic will.

That explained Box 314.

But why impersonate Ethan to retrieve it after Claire died?

They found Julian in Philadelphia.

He did not run.

He admitted accessing the box.

“I thought Ethan was compromised.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“By whom?”

“Your family.”

“That's not an answer.”

Julian looked at Alexander.

“Your brother’s firm had copies of every draft Claire ever made.”

Alexander did not deny it.

“My firm handled the estate.”

“And your internal server had been breached.”

Alexander frowned.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“That breach was contained.”

“No.”

Julian produced evidence.

Someone maintained hidden administrator access for eighteen months.

They could see every version of Claire’s will.

Every medical directive.

Every trust amendment.

Every communication with Alexander.

The enemy did not need to guess.

They watched Claire try to protect Lily in real time.

Julian impersonated Ethan because the bank would release the box only to Claire or Ethan under emergency instructions.

He took one thing from it.

Not the will.

A sealed packet labeled:

FOR LILY AT AGE EIGHTEEN.

“Where is it?”

“Safe.”

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

Victoria almost smiled.

Ethan stepped forward.

Julian did not move.

“Claire specifically wrote that you were not to receive it.”

That hurt more than Ethan expected.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Open it.”

“No.”

“It concerns my daughter.”

“It belongs to your daughter.”

Ethan stopped.

That distinction mattered.

Claire had protected something even from him.

Then Julian added:

“But I can show you what was attached.”

A photograph.

Claire pregnant.

Standing outside a fertility clinic.

Date:

seven years earlier.

Lily had been conceived around that time.

Beside Claire stood Victoria.

Ethan looked at her.

Victoria went pale.

“You were there?”

She nodded.

“Why?”

“Claire asked me.”

“For what?”

Victoria’s composure cracked.

“To be her donor.”

Silence.

Ethan stared at Lily’s tormentor.

“What kind of donor?”

Victoria looked toward the staircase.

Then answered:

“Egg donor.”

The room seemed to tilt.

If true, Victoria was not simply some aristocratic family acquaintance.

Genetically—

May you like

she could be Lily’s biological mother.

And suddenly the clause giving Victoria guardianship was no longer inexplicable.
