Chapter 8 - The Dead Architect

Adrian Vale had died two years after Megan.

That fact mattered.

If he personally killed Megan after her crash, he could have done it.

If he orchestrated Emma’s attack twelve years later, he could not.

Unless his death was false.

Or someone inherited his identity.

They searched Mercer Estate.

No intruder.

The Architect login originated from a service server hidden behind a wall in Graham’s old library.

Graham looked genuinely stunned when technicians opened it.

“You built this house,” Julia said.

“I did not wire that.”

The server had been installed during renovations nine years earlier.

Three years after Adrian’s death.

Contractor:

Vale Systems.

Adrian’s company.

Continued by his widow.

Dr. Evelyn Vale.

Emma knew her.

Everyone did.

Evelyn was Mercer Automotive’s longtime board ethics chair.

She was at the wedding.

Front row.

When Emma entered, Evelyn had fainted and been taken away.

No one had mentioned her again.

Claire remembered.

“She left before the USB played.”

Ethan called the hospital.

Evelyn never arrived.

Security footage showed her getting into a car alone.

Missing.

Another suspect.

Too convenient.

Emma asked about Adrian.

Brilliant systems architect.

Designed M17’s local authentication.

Mentored Noah.

Worked closely with Margaret.

Feuded with Graham.

After Megan’s death, Adrian wanted M17 shut down.

Graham claimed he agreed.

Documents showed otherwise.

One year later Adrian began secretly copying archived incident files.

Then his plane crashed.

No bodies recovered.

Emma almost laughed.

“How many people around this company die without bodies?”

Graham did not appreciate it.

Neither did anyone else.

Investigators reopened Adrian’s case.

No evidence he survived.

But his administrator account remained active because old systems treated it as root identity.

Anyone with his hardware token could impersonate Architect.

Where was the token?

Missing after his death.

Evelyn inherited his belongings.

Now Evelyn was gone.

Claire said:

“She’s Architect.”

Noah shook his head.

“Maybe.”

Claire turned.

“What more do you need?”

“A token.”

“She had it.”

“We assume.”

“Her husband built the system.”

“We know.”

“She disappeared the second Emma showed the drive.”

“That is suspicious.”

Claire laughed.

“Thank you.”

Noah’s caution irritated her because caution had become essential.

Emma asked Margaret what Megan learned.

Margaret had one final voice message from her daughter, recorded at Saint Catherine’s before transfer.

They played it.

Megan sounded weak.

“Mom, Graham isn’t the one.”

Graham closed his eyes.

For twelve years Margaret believed Graham orchestrated everything.

Megan continued:

“He covered it after.”

Claire looked at Graham with contempt.

Accurate.

“Ethan locked me first, but someone unlocked it.”

Ethan looked down.

“Then someone used my key.”

Claire’s hand shook.

“Megan’s physical key.”

Megan continued:

“I saw him when the glass broke.”

Static.

“I know who Architect is.”

Everyone leaned closer.

“It isn’t Adrian.”

Silence.

The recording distorted.

Then Megan whispered:

“Architect is a role.”

Noah’s face changed.

Not a person.

A role.

M17 separated authority from identity.

The Architect account could be passed.

Adrian created it.

But anyone holding the root token became Architect.

Megan said:

“Adrian gave it to someone because he thought Graham would destroy the evidence.”

Graham whispered:

“Who?”

Megan answered:

“Someone he trusted more than Mercer.”

Static swallowed the name.

The message ended.

Claire nearly threw the recorder.

Emma stopped her.

“Don’t.”

Claire cried.

“We keep getting almost the truth.”

“Yes.”

“But every almost points somewhere.”

Emma rewound.

Someone Adrian trusted more than Mercer.

His widow Evelyn?

Likely.

His student Noah?

Possible.

Margaret?

Colleague.

Megan herself?

Maybe.

Then Noah noticed a timestamp.

The message was recorded at 3:14 A.M.

Transfer paperwork removing Megan from Saint Catherine’s occurred 4:02 A.M.

Forty-eight minutes later.

The person who took Megan likely knew she had recorded something.

Maybe Architect.

They searched visitor logs.

One person entered Saint Catherine’s at 3:27.

Evelyn Vale.

Claire stood.

“There.”

Noah said nothing.

Evelyn visited Megan.

Left at 3:51.

Transfer occurred eleven minutes later.

Security camera footage existed.

They retrieved it.

Evelyn emerged from Megan’s room crying.

She spoke with a nurse.

Then left.

At 4:00, two men in Mercer security uniforms entered.

Faces obscured by caps.

One signed transfer forms.

The signature looked like Graham.

Vehicle plate belonged to Mercer security.

Noah was at hospital with his father.

Ethan was at home under observation for concussion.

Graham claimed asleep.

Margaret had gone to get Claire.

Who sent them?

Architect.

Technicians enhanced one man’s wrist.

Silver watch.

Claire looked at Noah.

Noah did not react.

Emma remembered.

Same visual clue.

But twelve years earlier Noah had a verified alibi.

Could someone intentionally use Noah’s appearance?

A silver watch.

Mercer uniform.

Height.

Repeated years later.

Someone wanted witnesses to think security.

Maybe Noah specifically.

Noah whispered:

“I was being framed from the beginning.”

Graham looked at him.

“Or given an alibi.”

Noah smiled bitterly.

“Still don’t trust me.”

“No.”

“Fair.”

Emma studied the second man.

Something about his walk.

Familiar.

Left leg slightly stiff.

She had seen it.

At the wedding?

Maybe.

She asked to zoom.

The man turned.

Half profile.

Older image quality.

A scar near the ear.

Ethan inhaled.

“What?”

Emma asked.

Ethan pointed.

“That’s my uncle.”

Graham went rigid.

“Impossible.”

Graham’s younger brother:

Thomas Mercer.

He had died fourteen years earlier.

Before Megan’s crash.

Heart attack.

Body cremated.

Ethan shook his head.

“I know how Uncle Thomas walked.”

Graham stared at the footage.

Same stiff left leg from a childhood riding accident.

Claire whispered:

“Thomas was dead.”

Graham’s face emptied.

“Or I was told he was.”

Another family death.

Another unverified conclusion.

Thomas Mercer had been Mercer Automotive’s legal strategist.

He despised Graham’s obsession with company reputation.

He also had close ties to Adrian Vale.

If alive, Adrian might trust him.

If Thomas inherited Architect—

everything changed.

They pulled Thomas’s death certificate.

Signed by Dr. Evelyn Vale.

Emma felt the room tilt.

Evelyn again.

Cause:

acute myocardial infarction.

No autopsy at family request.

Authorized by Graham.

Graham stared.

“I saw him in the hospital.”

“Alive?” Julia asked.

“Yes.”

“After death?”

“No.”

“Body?”

Graham closed his eyes.

“No.”

His brother’s casket had been closed because the family wanted privacy.

Again.

Emma asked:

“Why would Thomas fake his death?”

Graham shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Margaret whispered:

“Maybe he didn’t.”

Perhaps someone used his gait.

His clothes.

His identity.

Expectation mapping.

The system taught exactly that.

Then a new email arrived on Emma’s recovered account.

Sender:

EVELYN VALE.

Subject:

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH, COME WITHOUT GRAHAM.

Attached coordinates.

Old Mercer test track.

Ethan stood.

“No.”

Emma looked at him.

“No?”

“You are not walking into another trap.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m not asking.”

Ethan stopped.

He recognized that tone.

So did Claire.

Emma continued:

“But I’m also not going alone.”

Julia organized police surveillance.

Evelyn’s instruction said without Graham.

Fine.

Graham stayed.

Ethan, Claire, Noah and Emma went with Julia.

The test track looked abandoned.

Rain began.

Emma hated the sound.

Her body remembered before her mind did.

They found Evelyn inside the old control tower.

She was alive.

No weapon.

No attempt to flee.

She looked at Emma’s bandages and began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“For what?”

Evelyn held out a small black hardware token.

ARCHITECT.

Claire raised her chin.

“You had it.”

“Yes.”

“You took Megan.”

“No.”

“You were at the clinic.”

“Yes.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked at Noah.

Noah’s body went tense.

She said:

“Your father.”

Noah’s face emptied.

“My father was in the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“Having a heart attack.”

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Evelyn continued:

“His heart attack was staged.”

Noah whispered:

“Why?”

“Because your father was the second Architect.”

Noah’s eyes filled.

Evelyn looked at Emma.

“And when he died eight years ago…”

She extended the token toward Noah.

“He left the role to his son.”

Noah stared at it as if it were a weapon.

“I never saw that.”

Evelyn whispered:

“You did.”

“No.”

“You just don’t remember.”

Emma’s skin went cold.

Another missing memory.

Another man being told his own mind could not be trusted.

Then Evelyn added:

“Because M17 was never only about cars.”

And behind her, an old monitor flickered on.

A video showed Noah strapped into a chair.

Date:

Eight years earlier.

His father stood beside him.

May you like

On screen, Noah screamed:

“Don’t make me forget.”
