Chapter 4 - Maya Marlowe

Her name was Maya Jensen.
Legally.
But Jensen came from her mother.
Her biological father:
Richard Marlowe.
Daniel knew the name instantly.
Marlowe Harbor.
Richard had owned the property through a private family trust.
He died five years ago.
Maya inherited a minority beneficial interest.
She had never told Daniel.
Why?
Daniel confronted her through attorneys.
Maya requested to meet.
Daniel agreed.
Lawyer present.
“No more omissions.”
Maya nodded.
Then she confessed.
When she met Ethan, she already knew his surname.
Mercer.
She knew Daniel had tried to buy her father’s harbor property.
But she did not date Ethan for information.
At least not initially.
She liked him.
Then Ethan casually mentioned Daniel was still interested in waterfront expansion.
Maya became curious.
After she and Ethan broke up, she attended the fundraiser because Daniel was there.
That part was intentional.
“Why?”
“I wanted to know what kind of man was trying to buy my family’s property.”
“So you researched me.”
“Yes.”
“Then married me.”
Maya started crying.
“That wasn't the plan.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“People keep saying that.”
She claimed she genuinely fell in love with him.
Daniel believed she believed that.
Not the same as believing it was enough.
Then he asked about the Marlowe Trust payments.
Maya received distributions from her father.
She used some to help Ethan.
“Why?”
She looked at the floor.
“Because I still loved him.”
There.
No justification.
Daniel felt strangely calmer hearing it plainly.
“When did you realize?”
“Before the wedding.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Before?”
“Yes.”
“So you married me knowing you loved my son.”
“I thought it was old attachment.”
“You thought marriage would cure it?”
“I thought choosing you would.”
That sentence hurt more than a lie.
She had used marriage as an experiment.
Then Daniel asked whether she had ever passed company information to the Marlowe Trust.
Maya looked shocked.
“No.”
“Did you ever discuss Marlowe Harbor with Ethan?”
“Yes.”
“Did Ethan give you company documents?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Ethan later.
Different answer.
Ethan had sent Maya internal expansion projections.
Not classified.
But confidential.
Why?
He wanted to impress her.
Maya insisted she never shared them.
Then Daniel’s attorney found something.
Marlowe Harbor had recently rejected another Mercer offer.
The rejection cited exact internal numbers from Ethan’s projections.
Someone had leaked them.
Maya swore it wasn't her.
Ethan swore he sent them only to Maya.
Daniel looked at both.
One was lying.
Or someone else had access.
Then Maya said:
“My trust adviser can read my email.”
Who?
Nathan Cole.
Age forty-five.
Former Marlowe family attorney.
He managed Maya’s distributions.
Nathan also happened to be the man who had arranged the charity auction where Daniel and Maya first met.
Daniel stared.
“You said you went there because I was attending.”
“I did.”
“Who told you I would be there?”
Maya slowly understood.
“Nathan.”
That changed the shape of the story.
May you like
Maybe Maya had targeted Daniel.
Or maybe someone had steered her directly toward him.
