Chapter 2 - Seven Weeks

Daniel drove home alone.
Maya went with Ethan.
That hurt almost comically.
Even after being caught, they still left together.
Daniel parked the van behind Mercer Coast Logistics and carried the black folder into his office.
He did not open it immediately.
First, he called his attorney.
Then his accountant.
Then his older sister Caroline.
Nobody knew about a Mercer Continuity Trust.
That was strange because Mercer family finances were rarely sophisticated enough to require dramatic names.
Daniel’s father, Walter Mercer, founded the delivery company with three vans in 1987.
Daniel joined at nineteen.
His older brother Michael joined two years later.
Michael died six years ago.
Heart attack.
No mystery.
No suspicious accident.
Just a forty-seven-year-old man who ignored his blood pressure until his body stopped giving him choices.
Walter died eighteen months later.
Daniel inherited operating control.
Or believed he had.
Then he opened the folder.
First page:
Dear Daniel,
If you are reading this because Ethan found the cargo copy, then I failed to clean up a problem I should have handled years ago.
Daniel stopped.
Ethan found the cargo copy.
Walter expected Ethan to find it?
He continued.
The Mercer Continuity Trust was created in 2009.
Purpose:
Protect operating assets from family divorce, creditor claims, reckless heirs and forced sale.
Daniel almost laughed.
Walter had distrusted everyone.
The trust held:
51% voting rights in Mercer Coast Logistics.
Three warehouse properties.
A coastal storage parcel.
Intellectual property associated with routing software.
Daniel had inherited income rights.
Not full control.
Trustee:
Bishop Fiduciary Group.
Protector:
Until his death, Walter Mercer.
Successor protector:
Michael Mercer.
But Michael had died first.
Then:
Secondary successor protector — Ethan Mercer, upon age twenty-one.
Daniel stared.
His son had turned twenty-one six months earlier.
Ethan had acquired trust authority and never told him.
Why?
Next page.
Special marital provision.
If Daniel remarried before Ethan reached twenty-five, Daniel’s spouse could become provisional beneficiary only after independent review.
Maya’s name had been entered.
Who added it?
Signature:
Judith Bishop.
Daniel called Bishop Fiduciary immediately.
Judith Bishop agreed to meet the next morning.
Then his phone rang.
Maya.
He almost ignored it.
Instead:
“Talk.”
She cried immediately.
Daniel felt nothing.
“We didn't mean for you to find out like this.”
“That sentence is useless.”
“I know.”
“How long?”
Silence.
“Seven weeks.”
The anonymous message had been accurate.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“When did it start?”
“After your trip to Seattle.”
He remembered.
Four days away.
New regional contract.
He had brought Maya a necklace from the airport.
She had kissed him when he came home.
Daniel’s stomach turned.
“Did you sleep with him in my house?”
“No.”
“Do not lie now.”
“I’m not.”
“Where?”
Long pause.
“His apartment.”
Daniel stopped her.
He did not want details.
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Wrong answer.”
Maya cried harder.
“I was lonely.”
“So you chose my son.”
“I knew him before you.”
Silence.
Daniel sat completely still.
“What?”
Maya realized she had said too much.
“Daniel…”
“What does that mean?”
“Ethan and I met before you and I did.”
“How long before?”
“Almost a year.”
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“Were you together?”
Maya did not answer.
“Were you together?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
The chair rolled backward.
“How long?”
“Four months.”
“And you married me without telling me you had dated my son.”
“It was over.”
“Was Ethan at our wedding knowing he had slept with the bride?”
“Daniel—”
He ended the call.
Then Ethan called.
Daniel answered immediately.
“Did you know Maya had met me before our wedding?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she knew I was your father before she met me?”
Silence.
That was different.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Ethan.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“So she knew exactly who I was.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Don't protect her.”
“I’m not.”
“You have been protecting her for seven weeks.”
Ethan breathed hard.
Then finally:
“She asked me about you before she ever met you.”
“What did she ask?”
“Your company.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What about it?”
“Whether Grandpa had ever sold the coastal warehouse.”
Daniel looked toward the trust folder.
The coastal warehouse was inside the Mercer Continuity Trust.
May you like
And according to the file—
Maya had somehow become a provisional beneficiary before she married him.
