Chapter 3 - The land Emily hid

Daniel did not call Nolan immediately.
That surprised even him.
Eight months earlier, he would have confronted anyone who hinted that Emily had kept something important from him. Marriage had made him comfortable enough to confuse transparency with entitlement.
The coma had changed that.
Now he wanted facts before explanations.
With Rosa’s permission, he contacted an attorney whose name she remembered from the Cedar Hollow property sign.
Margaret Sloan answered cautiously.
When Daniel identified himself, the silence on the other end lasted long enough to become meaningful.
“Mr. Carter,” she finally said, “I wondered when you would call.”
That sentence disturbed him more than surprise would have.
Margaret explained that Cedar Hollow had belonged to Emily’s maternal grandmother, Ruth Bennett, who died two years earlier. The land was worth far more than Daniel imagined—not because of the house, which was modest, but because development had swallowed almost everything around the Blanco River corridor.
Several companies had tried to purchase it.
Emily refused.
Instead, she had been working toward a conservation arrangement that would preserve most of the land while allowing a limited educational and community-use section along the old orchard.
Daniel sat in the hospital family lounge listening to a description of his wife’s life that felt intimate and completely foreign.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“I can’t answer that.”
“Did Nolan oppose the conservation plan?”
“Yes.”
Nolan believed selling would produce between eleven and fourteen million dollars. Under Ruth’s estate structure, Emily held majority ownership while Nolan held a smaller contingent interest tied to certain development proceeds.
If Emily conserved the land, Nolan would receive far less.
There was motive for conflict.
Not proof of wrongdoing.
Daniel forced himself to remember that distinction.
“When did you last speak to Emily?”
“The morning of her accident.”
Daniel stopped.
Margaret’s voice softened.
“She was supposed to sign final conservation instructions that afternoon.”
“She never told me.”
“She said she wanted the agreement complete before discussing it with anyone at home.”
That hurt.
Not because Daniel felt entitled to Cedar Hollow.
Because Emily had deliberately excluded him from something important while pregnant with their child.
Margaret continued.
“She sounded frightened that morning.”
“Of Nolan?”
“She didn’t specify.”
“What did she say?”
Margaret hesitated before answering.
“She said someone had accessed an older medical power of attorney she believed had been revoked.”
Daniel sat straighter.
“What power of attorney?”
An old document Emily signed six years earlier, before meeting Daniel, after a minor surgery.
It named Nolan as temporary healthcare agent.
Emily later revoked it.
Margaret had prepared the revocation.
But when Emily requested a copy days before the crash, they discovered something unsettling.
A duplicate of the old document had recently been pulled from an archive.
By whom, Margaret did not know.
Daniel looked through the glass wall toward the maternity corridor.
Emily was unconscious.
Eight months pregnant.
Her brother had financial reasons to care whether she could legally speak.
And someone had been retrieving old documents about who could speak for her.
His phone vibrated before he could ask more.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Daniel?”
The male voice was calm.
Educated.
Familiar from Christmas calls years earlier.
Nolan Bennett.
“I heard Emily moved.”
Daniel said nothing.
Nolan continued.
“I’m coming to Austin tomorrow.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because if she’s becoming conscious, there are things she may say that you won’t understand.”
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“What things?”
Nolan’s answer came quietly.
“Ask your wife why she went to Cedar Hollow the night before the crash.”
Then he hung up.
Daniel stared at the dead screen.
Rosa had said Emily visited two weeks before the accident.
Nolan said she returned the night before.
One of them was wrong.
Or Emily had gone back twice.
May you like
And Daniel had known about neither visit.
Cliffhanger: Emily’s accident had occurred less than twelve hours after a secret return to Cedar Hollow—and Nolan seemed to know exactly why she had gone there.
