Chapter 13 - the secret hidden above the lobby

The clock room was narrower than I expected and smelled like machine oil, dust, and old air.

Through the slatted vent, I could see the hotel lobby below in slices of marble and gold light. It felt strange being suspended over the place where all of this had begun—with a stranger’s hand grabbing my sleeve and asking me to become someone else.

In one sense, I had.

In another, I was only now becoming myself.

Nora pointed me to the housing behind the clock mechanism. The panel lifted away more easily than it should have. Someone had opened it before.

Inside was a taped package wrapped in oilcloth.

My mother’s handwriting covered the outside.

For Elias, if he ever learns to look up.

I laughed once, unexpectedly.

It sounded like her.

Inside were photographs, duplicate trust records, and a final letter addressed to Elias directly. I did not read it first. I gave it to him unopened in his hospital room later that night.

He held it for a long time before breaking the seal.

I looked away while he read.

When he finally spoke, his voice was ruined.

“She came back six years ago.”

My head snapped toward him.

“What?”

“She met with Nora. She watched from the gallery during a charity dinner.” He swallowed hard. “She wanted to see whether Victor still controlled me.”

“What did she decide?”

He stared at the paper.

“That I was trying, too late, in the right direction.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means she almost told me where you were.” His voice broke further. “Then Victor’s investigator showed up in Milwaukee again and she ran before she could risk it.”

I sat down.

For some reason that nearly hurt more than all the other delays. She had been close. So close.

Then Elias handed me the letter.

At the bottom, beneath the lines asking his forgiveness without quite granting him absolution, my mother had written one final instruction.

If David ever returns, do not give him the company first. Give him the truth. If he still stays after that, then you will know he is yours by choice and not by greed.

I closed my eyes.

My mother had known me before I knew myself.

The truth came before inheritance.

That was the order.

Not because money didn’t matter, but because money lies about what binds people.

Before dawn, we did one final thing.

Elias legally reactivated the dormant trust and filed emergency civil and criminal referrals against Victor, Harrow Grant, and the attorneys involved in the false competency transfer. The board suspended Victor pending investigation.

But as security moved to locate him, he had already vanished.

One of the lawyers was missing too.

And from the valet footage we learned they had left through the underground garage forty minutes earlier.

Victor had fled the hotel.

He was still out there.

May you like

And before he disappeared fully, he sent a single text to Elias’s phone.

You can have the son. I’m keeping the ending.
