Chapter 5 - Eleanor’s Signature

Eleanor admitted signing witness line.
But she claimed she had not seen Richard sign.
Eleven years earlier, two weeks after Margaret’s funeral, a records courier came to house with boxes.
Eleanor signed receipt because Richard was away.
“Why does his signature appear above yours?”
“I assumed courier already had it.”
“Did you check?”
“No.”
Another forged signature.
Older than current guardianship fraud.
Someone had been imitating family signatures for at least eleven years.
Maybe longer.
The courier company no longer existed.
Archived business registration led to one name:
Martin Vale.
A document-services contractor who had worked for several hospitals, schools and law offices.
Including hospital where Sophie had just been born.
Maya found Martin’s current company:
Vale Records Management.
He still handled off-site archival scanning for hospital network.
That gave him potential access to Emma’s maternity information.
And perhaps old school records.
Martin agreed interview.
He denied creating guardianship form.
But when shown 2004 signature source, he recognized scan format.
“It came through our archive.”
“Who accessed it?”
“Could be hundreds of authorized users over years.”
“Can you narrow recent access?”
“Yes.”
Audit log showed old school form was opened three weeks earlier.
User:
C.HALE.
Caroline.
She stared at screen.
“I did not access that.”
Her old medical credentials had expired.
But username remained in legacy archive because she once served school district physician.
Password reset occurred three weeks ago.
Recovery email?
Not Caroline’s.
An address registered to Hale Family Foundation.
Richard’s nonprofit.
Richard denied knowing.
Eleanor sat very still.
Emma noticed.
“What?”
Eleanor shook head.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“Every time that foundation comes up, you look terrified.”
Richard turned toward wife.
Eleanor finally spoke.
“The foundation paid for Emma’s prenatal care.”
Emma frowned.
“My insurance paid.”
“Most of it.”
“What didn't it pay?”
Eleanor looked at Sophie.
“Private genetic screening.”
Emma’s anger rose.
“What screening?”
Richard looked equally confused.
Eleanor admitted she had authorized an expanded hereditary panel after learning Margaret had died from rare vascular complication.
She wanted Sophie screened for risk.
Without Emma’s knowledge.
“That is not your decision!”
“I was trying to protect her.”
“You keep using that word after taking choices away from me.”
Eleanor looked down.
The genetic screening required consent.
Whose signature appeared?
Emma Mercer.
Forged.
Same copied signature.
Date:
six weeks earlier.
Someone had already used forged Emma signature before guardianship form.
Why?
Was guardianship only second stage of larger plan involving Sophie’s medical data?
Then Maya checked laboratory order.
Ordering physician:
Dr. Caroline Hale.
Caroline exploded.
“I never ordered that.”
Another stolen credential.
Test results had been delivered not to Emma.
Not Eleanor.
To private email:
Who controlled it?
Foundation administrator.
A woman named Patricia Wynn.
Richard’s executive assistant for fourteen years.
Emma knew Patricia.
Patricia had been at Margaret’s funeral.
Patricia had organized Emma’s wedding.
Patricia had sent flowers when Sophie was born.
And when investigators reached her office—
Patricia was gone.
On her desk lay a copy of Temporary Guardianship Form.
