Chapter 13 - The Woman in the Photograph

Caroline had been declared dead after the crash.

Ian never saw her body clearly.

He was shattered.

Sedated.

Mom handled identification.

The body had severe facial injuries.

Gloria identified Caroline using jewelry and clothing.

DNA confirmation wasn’t standard because nobody questioned identity.

Then why did the photograph exist?

Investigators traced it.

Taken in New Mexico.

The woman used the name Cara Lane.

Employment records.

Apartment lease.

Then disappeared again.

Fingerprints from an old employment form matched Caroline.

Alive.

At least three months after her supposed death.

Ian nearly collapsed.

“Why would she leave us?”

We didn’t know.

Then Mom explained what happened after the crash.

She arrived at the hospital.

A woman matching Caroline’s general appearance had been brought in unconscious.

Her belongings included Caroline’s purse.

Mom assumed.

Or claimed she assumed.

She identified the woman.

Later, the woman died.

But where was Caroline?

The crash involved only one reported occupant.

Unless there had been two.

Police reopened the case.

Old evidence revealed blood from two individuals inside the vehicle.

One was Caroline.

The other unknown.

Caroline survived.

Someone else died.

Why disappear?

Her red ledger gave us the likely answer.

She believed Mom, Dad and Richard were trying to use Lizzy.

She also feared Thomas Mercer.

And Daniel’s powerful family.

Maybe disappearing was her attempt to protect Lizzy.

But she left Lizzy with Ian.

Why not tell him?

Then we found a scheduled letter addressed to Ian.

Never delivered because the email service rejected the attachment.

Ian,

If I disappear, it is because someone has threatened Elizabeth. Do not look for me until Natalie knows the truth.

Again.

Me.

Why had Caroline trusted me so completely when we were never particularly close?

The answer came from Mom.

“Because you helped her once.”

“When?”

“You don’t remember.”

Years earlier, before Lizzy was born, Caroline called me after a fight with Ian.

I let her stay at our apartment.

I told her that if she ever needed somewhere safe, she could call me.

To me, it was one forgotten night.

To her, it was proof.

Then the investigation found Cara Lane again.

Current address:

Boise, Idaho.

Police contacted her.

It was Caroline.

Alive.

She refused to speak by phone.

She returned under attorney supervision.

Ian waited in a private room.

When Caroline entered, he stood but couldn’t move.

Neither could she.

“You’re alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

Four years of grief existed between those words.

Then:

“Why?”

Caroline looked at Lizzy’s photograph.

“Because Walt said if I exposed him, he’d make sure Ian lost her.”

Dad.

Again.

“He had evidence of Ian’s drug use.”

Ian stared.

“I wasn’t using then.”

“No.”

Caroline’s voice trembled.

“He was already building the evidence.”

She claimed Dad had begun planting pills in Ian’s car.

Creating photographs.

Preparing a future narrative.

Caroline panicked.

After the crash, she realized someone had tampered with her brake line.

Investigators had missed it.

She believed Dad tried to kill her.

So she disappeared.

“Why leave Lizzy?”

“I thought Gloria would protect her.”

Every one of us stared.

Caroline started crying.

“Gloria told me Walt acted alone.”

Mom had convinced Caroline she was secretly protecting Lizzy.

Caroline remained hidden.

Mom sent occasional updates.

Photographs.

False reports.

“She told me Lizzy was happy.”

I felt sick.

“Did she tell you Ian was in treatment?”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell you she locked Lizzy in a closet?”

Caroline’s face emptied.

“No.”

Then she handed investigators years of messages.

Mom had been communicating with Caroline the entire time.

That explained everything she knew.

The Mercer trust.

Daniel.

Caroline’s intentions.

But one message stood out.

Sent by Gloria six months earlier:

We are almost ready. Once Walt moves the money, you can come home.

Caroline looked at us.

“I thought she meant Lizzy’s insurance trust.”

“What did she mean?”

Mom refused to answer.

Then investigators searched the shell-company properties from the red ledger.

One Nevada property contained a private vault.

Inside:

Cash.

Passports.

And four new identities.

Gloria.

Walt.

Lizzy.

Caroline.

They weren’t planning to steal the money and abandon Caroline.

Mom planned for all four of them to disappear together.

But Caroline swore she knew nothing.

Then whose idea was the fourth passport?

Mom finally asked to speak to me alone.

When we sat down, she whispered:

“You still think Walt is the one who planned all this.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“So did I.”

My skin prickled.

“Then who?”

Mom looked through the observation window.

At Caroline.

May you like

And whispered:

“She did.”
