Chapter 5 - What Margaret Knew
Margaret initially denied recognizing Elijah.
Daniel placed the wedding photograph in front of her.
Her face changed.
“Who is he?”
“You already know.”
“Say it.”
Margaret stared at the photograph.
“Elijah Brooks.”
“So you lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father was digging up something that should have stayed buried.”
Daniel’s patience snapped.
“A man was erased from our company history.”
“You don't understand what happened.”
“Then explain.”
Margaret finally did.
Elijah never vanished.
Samuel secretly supported him for decades.
Money.
Housing.
Medical expenses.
Why?
Guilt?
Partly.
But also because Samuel and Elijah remained friends.
Perhaps closer than brothers.
After Henry Sr. died, Samuel wanted to restore Elijah’s ownership.
Company lawyers warned it could trigger tax disputes, title litigation, and claims against decades of transactions.
Samuel backed down.
Instead he created a private trust for Elijah.
Margaret knew because she worked for the law firm administering it before marrying Arthur.
Daniel stared.
“You handled Elijah’s trust?”
“As a junior associate.”
“So Dad married the woman who knew the family’s biggest secret.”
Margaret looked away.
“Not intentionally.”
Arthur supposedly learned years later.
Was he angry?
Yes.
But not for the obvious reason.
Arthur discovered Margaret had signed a confidentiality agreement.
She could not discuss Elijah.
Even with her husband.
Then Daniel asked:
“What does Lily have to do with any of this?”
Margaret’s expression closed again.
“Nothing.”
Lie.
Daniel knew immediately.
“Then why tell her she isn't true family?”
Margaret snapped:
“Because she isn't.”
Daniel stood.
“She is my daughter.”
“Legally.”
“That's enough.”
“Not for that chair.”
There.
The chair mattered differently.
“Why?”
Margaret refused.
Then Rebecca appeared with Arthur’s estate inventory.
The rocking chair had been specifically excluded from general household property.
Description:
EDWARD CHAIR — CUSTODIAL OBJECT.
Custodial.
Not sentimental.
Not antique.
Object.
Arthur had treated it almost like evidence.
Then Rose called.
She had found one of Edward’s letters.
I put Samuel’s ring where Father will never look because one day the horse may need to prove which brother told the truth.
Daniel looked at the ring in his hand.
It was Samuel’s ring.
Not Edward’s.
Then whose ring did Rose have?
Edward’s.
Two brothers.
Two rings.
One hidden in Edward’s chair.
One passed down through Edward’s daughter.
But Arthur had possessed both before giving Edward’s ring to Rose.
Meaning Arthur had reunited them.
Why?
Attorney Price finally released one sealed document after Rose voluntarily appeared with the second ring.
Not DNA results.
A corporate charter.
Whitmore Stables, 1948.
Three original ownership percentages.
Henry Whitmore Sr. — 40%.
Elijah Brooks — 40%.
And someone whose name had been blacked out — 20%.
Daniel stared.
There had been a third owner.
Price turned over a forensic restoration.
The erased name appeared.
Eleanor Brooks.
Daniel had never heard of her.
Margaret whispered:
“Oh God.”
Daniel turned.
“You know her too.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“She was Elijah’s sister.”
