Chapter 1 - Room 214

Brenda looked nothing like the woman I knew from Crestview Developments.

At the office, she was polished within an inch of perfection.

Blonde hair smooth.

Heels immaculate.

Blouses pressed.

A smile that somehow made every man in the conference room feel as though she had noticed him specifically.

Outside Room 214, she looked terrified.

“What are you doing here?” she shouted.

A nurse glanced toward us.

I kept my voice low.

“We’re in a hospital, Brenda.”

Her eyes dropped to the clear plastic evidence bag in my hand.

Inside was a piece of red lace.

Her red lace.

The underwear I had found beneath the passenger seat of my husband’s Mercedes three days earlier.

Mark and I had been married twenty-eight years.

Long enough that betrayal should have felt complicated.

It didn’t.

The moment I smelled Brenda’s perfume inside his car, everything became painfully simple.

Mark had lied.

Brenda had lied.

And neither knew that instead of confronting them, I had mailed the underwear directly to Brenda’s husband.

You deserve to know.

—A neighbor.

Brenda stared at the bag.

“You sent it.”

“I returned something that wasn’t mine.”

“You bitter—”

The door to Room 214 opened.

Andrew stepped out on crutches, his right leg locked inside a brace.

He looked exhausted.

But his eyes were clear.

“Are you going to keep lying to me?”

Brenda froze.

Andrew had fractured his ankle after confronting her about the package. She stormed toward their apartment stairwell. He followed, missed a step, and fell.

Not Brenda’s fault physically.

But apparently the argument had uncovered something else.

Andrew held a thick envelope.

Brenda saw it.

Every trace of anger disappeared from her face.

“Andrew.”

He ignored her.

“Laura, you need this.”

Brenda moved first.

I caught the envelope before she could.

She grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.”

That single word interested me more than anything she had said.

I pulled free.

The envelope contained bank statements.

Transfers.

Dozens of them.

Crestview Developments to an entity called Blue Cedar Holdings.

Blue Cedar to another account.

Then another.

Amounts ranging from $48,000 to $390,000.

Total:

$8.7 million.

Mark’s authorization appeared repeatedly.

I looked at Brenda.

“This isn’t just an affair.”

She backed away.

The elevator chimed.

Mark stepped into the hallway.

Navy suit.

Silver tie.

Salt-and-pepper hair perfectly arranged.

Then he saw the papers.

His face changed.

“Laura.”

He rushed toward me.

“Give those to me.”

I stepped backward.

“No.”

I flipped to the final page.

A signature sat beneath a twenty-eight-year-old transfer agreement.

I recognized it immediately.

MANUEL ALVAREZ.

My father.

My hands began shaking.

“Did my father sign this?”

Mark stopped moving.

Andrew looked confused.

But Brenda laughed.

A strange, desperate laugh.

“Ask him.”

“Brenda,” Mark warned.

She looked at me.

“Your father knew.”

Mark grabbed her arm.

“Shut up.”

She pulled free.

“Then tell her why you married her!”

The hallway became silent.

I stared at my husband.

Twenty-eight years of marriage.

One company.

Two children grown and gone.

A thousand ordinary mornings.

“Mark?”

May you like

He said nothing.

And that silence frightened me more than the red lace ever had.
