Chapter 7 - The Signature Daniel Made

I did not believe it.
Not for even one second.
Daniel spent final months proving I had not signed loan.
Why would he forge my signature himself?
Catherine claimed Daniel had once instructed her to notarize an already-signed guarantee because he needed loan closed quickly.
Then later he “changed his mind” and began accusing Vivian.
It sounded absurd.
But prosecutors checked.
An email existed.
From Daniel’s account.
Catherine, Elena approves. Please process without delay.
My hands went cold.
Was Daniel lying to me?
Then metadata.
Email sent at 2:13 a.m.
Daniel’s laptop asleep at home.
Phone off.
Login originated from Vivian’s residence.
Spoofed or unauthorized account access.
Daniel did not send.
Then Catherine’s immunity hopes weakened.
She revised:
“Vivian told me Daniel sent it.”
So Catherine had not communicated directly with him.
She relied on forwarded printout.
Then forensic email header confirmed fake.
Someone created forged screenshot rather than actual sent email.
Catherine had either been deceived or participated.
Her credibility damaged.
But she did reveal something useful.
Vivian kept a second phone.
A small prepaid device.
Used only for “family emergencies.”
Police found it hidden inside sewing cabinet after search warrant.
Messages with Grant.
And Martin.
There.
No aliases.
No sophisticated criminal code.
Just entitlement.
Vivian:
Elena won’t sign.
Grant:
Then we use sample from house closing.
Vivian:
Make it clean.
Grant:
Martin can.
My stomach turned.
Direct evidence.
Then:
Vivian:
Daniel cannot know until refinance closes.
Grant:
He won’t.
Months later:
Daniel is asking about Northbridge.
Grant:
Mom, delete everything.
Vivian:
I’m not stupid.
Apparently she was arrogant enough to keep phone.
Then message three days before Daniel’s crash:
Vivian:
He threatened police.
Grant:
He’ll calm down.
Vivian:
He says Elena gets copies tomorrow.
Grant:
I’m handling it.
Next morning 6:57:
Vivian:
Where is he?
Grant:
Checking.
Then 6:58 tracker login.
7:02:
Grant:
Heading east.
Vivian:
Stop him before he sees Wells.
Patricia Wells.
COO.
Daniel planned meeting her before forensic firm.
Then 7:05:
Grant:
Calling.
Phone records showed Grant called Daniel three times.
No answer.
7:09:
Vivian:
Make him come home.
7:12 crash.
That was it.
No message:
hurt him.
run him off road.
cause accident.
Just attempts to intercept conversation.
Prosecutors did not pretend otherwise.
Then Daniel’s phone records revealed voicemail from Grant at 7:10.
“Daniel, pick up. Mom’s losing it. Don’t go to Patricia yet. We can fix this.”
That actually supported no murder intent.
Grant wanted Daniel alive and negotiating.
Twisted relief.
My husband died in coincidence while family fraud was exploding around him.
That was painful in different way.
There was no villain to blame for crash.
Just rain, worn tires, timing.
But fraud still real.
Then Catherine formally cooperated.
She admitted notarizing multiple signatures without witnessing them.
She claimed Vivian told her all were family-authorized.
Later she suspected otherwise but continued because Vivian paid $15,000.
Her culpability:
serious professional misconduct and potential fraud participation, but less central than Grant/Vivian.
Martin admitted creating signature templates.
Grant orchestrated.
Vivian approved.
Then prosecutors asked me to review one email chain.
Daniel to Rebecca Sloan, eight days before accident:
If Mom knew Elena understood numbers better than all of us, she would never have chosen her signature to forge.
I laughed and cried at once.
Daniel knew exactly what I was capable of.
Then next line:
I’ve spent years letting Elena shrink herself because it made peace easier with my family. That is my failure too.
I closed laptop.
For first time since funeral, anger at Daniel surfaced.
Not because he caused fraud.
Because he knew I was shrinking.
And he let me.
Love does not erase cowardice.
Then final line:
If we survive this mess, I owe my wife an apology before I owe anyone a prosecution.
We never got that conversation.
I had to live without it.
Then indictments came.
Grant.
Vivian.
Martin.
Catherine.
No murder.
Financial crimes.
And Vivian’s first public response outside courthouse was:
“Elena did this to us.”
May you like
Even then.
Still me.
