Chapter 12 - What Arthur Buried

Ethan, Lily and Trent reached the eastern tract just after midnight.
They did not enter the shaft blindly.
Emergency crews were called.
The old exploration tunnel had unstable sections.
Frank was found forty minutes later near a sealed survey chamber.
Alive.
Angry.
Embarrassed.
“What were you doing?” Ethan demanded after rescuers brought him out.
Frank held up Rebecca's map.
“Looking for Arthur's original cores.”
Geological core samples.
Physical evidence.
Rebecca's letter claimed Arthur had hidden original drilling cores after realizing Jonathan and later Red Basin might manipulate exploration reports.
If found, they could establish what minerals actually existed and where.
“Why not tell us?” Lily asked.
Frank looked at Ethan.
“Because I thought I had to fix it myself.”
Ethan almost said something cruel.
Instead:
“That thinking is why we're here.”
The chamber was later opened safely.
Inside were core samples.
Arthur's notebooks.
And an audio cassette.
Dated twenty years earlier.
Arthur Bell's voice.
If you're hearing this, then somebody is fighting over the eastern tract.
Arthur explained the geology.
Yes, lithium existed.
No, not at $200 million levels based on his data.
The eastern zone had another valuable feature.
Water.
A deep aquifer.
In increasingly dry areas, groundwater rights could become more important than minerals.
Arthur didn't want Red Basin drilling through it.
He placed the eastern tract into a future grandchild trust specifically to prevent commercial exploitation without multiple approvals.
The trust wasn't treasure.
It was a barrier.
Lily whispered:
“So Grandpa gave me land so I wouldn't sell it?”
“Essentially,” Rachel said later.
Lily laughed.
“That's manipulative.”
Ethan smiled.
“Yes.”
Even well-intentioned control was still control.
Then Arthur's recording changed.
He admitted taking Michael's geological work.
He apologized.
He admitted hiding Michael's survival from Diane and Claire.
He said:
I thought if I controlled every piece, nobody could destroy the family.
Ethan almost turned off the tape.
Same sentence.
Different generation.
Arthur continued:
I was wrong.
Then he named the person who should ultimately receive authority over the aquifer if the family couldn't agree.
Sarah Lawson.
Michael's daughter.
Not Ethan.
Not Lily.
Not Diane.
Sarah.
Why?
Because Michael discovered it.
Arthur believed returning stewardship to Michael's line was the closest thing to restitution.
Lily immediately agreed.
“Give it to Sarah.”
Rachel cautioned that legal restructuring would take time.
But Lily's instinct was clear.
She didn't want a fortune built around another stolen contribution.
Sarah didn't want personal ownership either.
She proposed a conservation trust with independent governance.
Ethan supported it.
Trent agreed to place part of Huxley Ranch under the same groundwater protections in exchange for fair easements.
For once, people negotiated without hiding parentage.
It felt almost unnatural.
Then Jonathan arrived.
Not dramatically.
Through lawyers.
Red Basin's value was collapsing.
He wanted settlement.
Drop IP claims.
Cancel disputed mineral contracts.
Admit the forged release originated from his draft.
Sell his interest in Red Basin.
In exchange, Ethan would not pursue certain civil claims beyond documented damages, though public authorities remained free to investigate.
Ethan did not decide from anger.
Rachel negotiated.
Frank faced his own exposure.
Claire hers.
Ryan cooperated.
No one was magically forgiven because they were family.
Then Diane asked to meet Ethan.
She had moved into a small rental.
Frank had filed for separation.
Madison was staying with a friend.
The old family house suddenly seemed too large for everyone.
Diane placed an envelope on the table.
“What now?” Ethan asked.
“Your birth certificate.”
“I have one.”
“The original.”
It listed Jonathan Reed as father.
Diane had changed it after birth.
Ethan stared.
“Why keep this?”
“I couldn't destroy it.”
“Why show me now?”
“Because there's something on the back.”
Arthur had written:
Ethan is not Jonathan's heir.
Diane believed this meant Arthur knew Jonathan wasn't Ethan's father.
DNA contradicted that.
So what did “heir” mean?
Diane answered:
“Jonathan had another son.”
Ethan stared.
“Before me?”
“Yes.”
“Did Jonathan know?”
“I don't think so.”
“How do you know?”
“Because the mother was Claire.”
Ethan froze.
His aunt Claire.
Diane's younger sister.
Jonathan had also had a relationship with Claire?
“No,” Diane said quickly.
“Then what are you saying?”
“Claire wasn't the mother.”
“Mom.”
Diane took a breath.
“Arthur used Claire's name on the record.”
Another falsified identity.
The actual mother was Rebecca Carter Huxley.
Frank's sister.
Ethan stared.
Jonathan and Rebecca had a son.
Before Ethan.
Who?
May you like
Diane whispered:
“Trent.”
