Chapter 6 - The estate file opened seven days before Napa
Daniel Mercer had a legitimate reason on paper.
He represented a party seeking clarification of an old settlement restriction.

He refused to disclose initially.
Court docket eventually did.
Vanessa Arden Vale.
Rachel.
She was trying to establish standing in a matter connected to the real Vanessa Vale.
How?
Name alone gave her none.
There had to be another relationship.
The filing sought interpretation of a clause concerning successor beneficiary rights arising from undisclosed custodial arrangements.
Miriam stared at the wording.
“This is about more than identity.”
Blackwood agreed.
His sister’s estate had included a small custodial trust.
Beneficiary sealed because the beneficiary was a minor.
He told me he had never known who the child was.
Neither had his parents.
Vanessa created it privately.
The trust received $2 million.
After her death, administration transferred to an outside fiduciary.
Then the records disappeared behind sealed guardianship proceedings.
Now Rachel claimed she had a connection to that beneficiary.
“What connection?” I asked.
Blackwood did not know.
Then he admitted something he had withheld.
“My sister was pregnant once.”
I stared at him.
“When?”
“Seven years before she died.”
“What happened?”
“She told us she lost the pregnancy.”
“Did she?”
“I believed her.”
The room went quiet.
A hidden child.
A custodial trust.
Rachel seeking successor rights.
Ethan once engaged to Vanessa.
The possibilities became ugly quickly.
We did not choose one.
We needed records.
The sealed guardianship file required court process.
While that moved, Rachel contacted Blackwood directly.

The arrangement was supposed to last six months while Vanessa resolved a family conflict.

The child was adopted under a new name.
That child would now be around nineteen.
Rachel was not claiming to be Vanessa.

She was claiming successor standing as someone connected to Vanessa’s concealed child.
Then why adopt her name?
Miriam asked.
Blackwood answered slowly.
“Because she may believe my family erased that child.”
The next file complicated it further.
Susan Arden had worked for the Vale household.
She was not merely staff.
She had been Vanessa’s confidante.
When Vanessa needed to hide the pregnancy, Susan helped.
Then after the adoption, Susan received money from Vanessa.
Not $1.4 million.
Smaller regular payments.
The big transfer to Rachel years later might have been connected to this hidden child.
Ethan’s role remained unclear.
Then a sealed letter from Vanessa’s estate surfaced.
Addressed to Ethan.
Blackwood had never seen it.

The first paragraph read:
If you ever use the child to control me, I will expose everything you and Daniel moved through Meridian.
I felt sick.

The hidden child was a boy.
