The Million-Dollar Trap / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

Stephen filed the petition.

He did it less than twenty-four hours after I announced the fake million-dollar figure.

Greed had finally made him move too fast.

The petition claimed Lucy was medically unstable.

Financially reckless.

Unable to manage her affairs.

It claimed I supported Theresa taking temporary control while I handled “ongoing legal matters in Canada.”

Except I was sitting beside Lucy in Minnesota.

With counsel.

And proof that I had never signed the filing.

More importantly, Stephen attached documents we had never seen before.

That was his mistake.

One contained the fake Canadian Nathan signature.

Another cited North Ridge payments.

Another included Theresa’s care diary.

The petition connected his entire system in one package.

My lawyer looked almost stunned.

“He just gave us a map.”

Not proof of every crime.

But a map.

Bank subpoenas and forensic reviews could now follow the links.

Stephen expected me to panic.

Instead, we formally challenged everything.

Then I called him.

“You filed.”

He was quiet.

“I’m protecting your wife.”

I nearly laughed.

“You’re trying to take her.”

“She is very ill.”

“She’s lucid.”

“For now.”

The phrase made my skin crawl.

I recorded nothing secretly where law might complicate it. My lawyer handled communications properly.

I simply let Stephen talk.

“You should be grateful, Nathan. Your family has carried Lucy for a year.”

I looked through the hospital glass at my wife learning to walk farther each day.

“My family nearly buried her.”

“She has cancer.”

“She also has a doctor who says treatment was interrupted.”

Silence.

“And the medication?”

More silence.

Then Stephen said:

“Be careful what you accuse people of.”

I smiled.

“I didn’t accuse you.”

He stopped.

That was exactly why I phrased it that way.

He had responded defensively to something I hadn’t attributed to him.

Fear made people volunteer information.

Then he asked:

“What do you want?”

Not innocence.

Negotiation.

“I want my father’s money back.”

“You think this is about money?”

My pulse changed.

“What is it about?”

He laughed softly.

“Ask Theresa why Joseph really created the trust.”

Then he hung up.

My mother refused to answer.

So Brianna finally did.

Dad had not created the trust simply as inheritance.

He was preparing to leave Theresa.

I stared.

“What?”

Joseph had discovered she and Stephen were having an affair.

Years ago.

Before Dad’s death.

That explained Stephen’s influence.

His access.

Theresa protecting him.

The resentment toward Lucy.

The fake estate story.

Dad planned to divorce Theresa and restructure everything.

Then he died before he could.

Again—

no evidence that anyone caused his death.

But motive to conceal his real estate plan?

Absolutely.

Then Brianna added the detail that changed the entire family.

“Dad wasn’t the only one who knew.”

“Who else?”

She looked at me.

“You.”

I laughed.

“No.”

“You found them together.”

“When?”

“The week before Dad died.”

I remembered nothing.

Brianna’s face turned pale.

“Nathan… you confronted Stephen.”

I stared at her.

“No, I didn’t.”

“Yes.”

“How would I forget that?”

May you like

Brianna whispered:

“Because that night you were in the hospital.”
