Chapter 10 - Aunt Elena

Elena Reed had not died.
My mother lied about that too.
More precisely, she told me “Aunt Elena is gone.”
At twelve I interpreted death.
She meant gone from family.
Elena was my father’s younger sister.
She lived in Santa Fe.
Retired architect.
Sixty-eight.
Claire contacted her cautiously.
She agreed to video call.
The moment her face appeared, I saw my father.
Same eyebrows.
Same way head tilted before difficult answer.
She started crying.
“Amelia.”
I couldn't speak.
“I thought you hated us.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa said you didn't want contact.”
Of course.
Then $100,000.
She had received.
Why?
Charles transferred to Elena Reed’s account? Maybe wrong due same surname confusion? No.
Elena explained.
Seven years ago, Warren called her.
Said:
“We’re trying to return money Jonathan intended for Amelia, but Amelia refuses family funds.”
Warren? If so he tried repay.
He asked Elena hold $100k until I “came around.”
Elena agreed.
Then Charles contacted:
“Amelia wants funds moved into managed family account.”
She signed transfer authorization believing.
Money left.
She never knew it vanished into Charles consulting entity.
So Charles stole attempted restitution too.
Warren had made at least one genuine repayment effort.
He delegated to wrong people.
Again.
Elena had emails.
Warren:
I owe Amelia more than money. I’m trying to repair one piece.
That complicated.
He was not cartoon.
He participated knowingly in using second trust, then later regretted and tried repay.
But hid truth.
Still.
Then why Elena cut off?
After Jonathan died, she and Vanessa fought over memorial and trust.
Elena accused Vanessa of remarrying too quickly? Maybe.
Vanessa banned contact.
Elena tried sending birthday gifts.
Returned.
Later Vanessa told her I wanted no relationship.
Both sides stopped.
No one verified.
Then Elena said:
“I kept one thing Jonathan gave me.”
A box.
Letters.
Photos.
His academy records.
And a videotape.
Dad recorded for me before death.
Why not trust attorney? Personal.
Elena mailed certified through Claire.
Video digitized.
Dad appeared thin.
“Amelia, your mother thinks this is morbid.”
He smiled.
“She may be right.”
Then he spoke about family.
Not money.
“Do not let anybody turn my death into a competition for who loved me correctly.”
Good.
Then:
“Elena and Vanessa are already fighting. They are both stubborn.”
Aunt laughed watching.
Then:
“If they stop speaking, you are allowed to speak to both.”
Permission child should never need.
Then Dad said:
“One more thing. Vanessa is stronger than she thinks, but when afraid she confuses control with care.”
My entire life.
Then:
“You may inherit that. Watch it.”
I did.
Army made control useful.
Could become danger personally.
Then:
“Do not become family commander.”
I laughed.
Then Elena and I started relationship slowly.
No instant aunt-mother replacement.
Calls.
Photos.
She told stories of Dad:
terrible singer.
loved burnt toast.
afraid horses.
My father became human, not saint.
Then she admitted:
“I judged Vanessa harshly.”
“Did she steal trust?”
“Yes.”
“Still.”
“I treated grief like moral test and made her defensive. I walked away too.”
Again people own pieces.
Then Charles.
His cooperation credibility collapsed after evidence he diverted repayment attempt.
Authorities expanded case.
He eventually entered plea negotiations around forgery, identity misuse, financial diversion. Civil restitution from his surrendered assets.
No need exact sentence yet.
Then Warren apologized to Elena too.
He had trusted Charles.
But he also benefited.
Then company settlement finalized.
My disputed 8% interest:
after valuation and legal negotiation, six percent restored to me, two percent converted into cash/restitution because historical restructuring and other shareholders' rights.
I did not want board seat automatically.
Placed shares into independent holding trust with professional voting adviser initially.
Why?
I was active-duty officer; outside business interests and conflicts needed review. I disclosed through Army ethics channels. I would not become secret family mogul.
I took no operational role.
Dividends would come transparently.
The irony:
I finally did have part of family company.
But not because mother gave.
Because records were corrected.
Then Lauren.
Her shares adjusted downward.
She still owned legitimate portion gifted from Warren separately.
She stayed financially secure.
No pauper punishment.
Then Vanessa.
Settlement required she surrender significant equity.
Her wealth decreased.
Not destroyed.
She moved out of giant house? No need.
She and Warren marriage strained.
They separated temporarily.
Because he discovered she had lied about some Charles interactions; she discovered he had lied about repayment efforts.
They entered counseling.
Whether remain together undecided.
Then I bought a townhouse.
Using:
my own savings,
some surviving trust funds,
not settlement windfall yet.
At closing, I brought Dad’s letter.
Home is wherever nobody makes you audition for belonging.
I framed that one sentence in my study.
Then first dinner:
Naomi.
Claire.
Two Army friends.
Lauren? Not yet.
I invited Aunt Elena.
She flew in.
At door, she hesitated.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
That was family chosen and recovered.
Then Lauren texted:
Mom wants know if she can send housewarming gift.
I answered:
No gifts.
A week later:
Mom sent handwritten card only.
It said:
I hope this home is kinder than the ones I made you earn.
I kept it.
May you like
Not forgiveness.
But evidence she was learning language.
