Chapter 8 - Evelyn's Voice After Death

Evelyn was dead.

Medical records confirmed.

Cremation witnessed.

No resurrection mystery.

Someone used archived recordings.

Voice synthesis.

The question was who possessed enough samples.

Family.

Staff.

Samuel.

Michael.

Julian.

Claire.

Victoria herself.

But the caller knew Evelyn’s private phrasing.

“Little parasite” was not Evelyn’s style.

Claire’s.

The caller mirrored Claire’s language to manipulate her.

Behavioral knowledge.

Someone had studied her.

Then Noah remembered something.

Grandma Evelyn recorded “family letters” before death.

Hours of video.

For every child.

Every grandchild.

Every major trust beneficiary.

The recordings were stored in the conservatory archive.

Access logs:

Claire.

Richard.

Victoria.

Samuel.

And one unknown external download three weeks before Evelyn died.

IP traced to a rehabilitation clinic.

Patient:

Natalie Vale.

Noah’s mother had downloaded Evelyn’s voice library.

Suspicion shifted.

Natalie admitted it.

Evelyn asked her to.

Why?

“To build a dead-man system.”

If Evelyn died, prerecorded messages could be released automatically to force disclosure.

Natalie helped configure it.

Did the system call Claire?

“No.”

Could it?

“Yes.”

Who had access?

Natalie.

Evelyn.

Samuel.

One administrator.

Name:

Grace Vale.

Natalie’s mother.

Alexander’s widow.

Victoria stared.

Her biological father had married another woman after the affair with Evelyn.

Grace was Natalie’s mother.

She was seventy-two.

Supposedly living in Arizona.

She had never appeared in the story because Richard claimed she had dementia.

She did not.

Medical records showed mild arthritis.

No cognitive diagnosis.

Another lie.

Grace had been erased because she knew everything.

Investigators found her.

Not Arizona.

A cottage fifteen miles from the Harcourt mansion.

Paid for by Evelyn.

Grace had watched Noah grow from a distance.

She was his maternal grandmother.

Victoria’s biological father’s widow.

And she hated the Harcourts.

When Victoria met her, Grace looked at her for a long time.

“You have his eyes.”

“Alexander?”

“Yes.”

“Did you call Claire?”

Grace smiled sadly.

“No.”

“Do you know who did?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Grace looked toward Noah, playing outside under supervision.

“His mother.”

Natalie.

Victoria’s stomach tightened.

Grace explained Natalie had become increasingly obsessed after Evelyn’s death.

She believed Claire’s engagement to Julian endangered Noah.

She wanted Claire removed from the family.

She used Evelyn’s voice system to provoke Claire.

Not to throw Noah into the pool.

To make Claire search the desk.

To expose Julian.

But Claire’s temper escalated.

Natalie miscalculated.

Again.

A parent claiming protection while creating danger.

Victoria called Natalie.

“Did you call Claire?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“You used Mom’s voice.”

“Yes.”

“You told her Noah took the key.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she hated him.”

“I knew she resented him.”

“You pushed her.”

“I wanted her to open the desk.”

“She threw your son into a pool.”

Natalie began crying.

“I didn't know she would do that.”

“But you used him.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Victoria’s voice broke for the first time.

“You stayed outside his life for seven years, then when you finally came back, you used his presence to manipulate another adult.”

Natalie had no defense.

“I thought I could expose Julian before seeing Noah.”

“You thought wrong.”

“I know.”

No clean heroes.

But Natalie was not the mastermind behind everything either.

She made the call.

Michael sent some threats.

Samuel triggered the archive.

Richard hid origins.

Claire committed the pool assault.

Different actors.

Overlapping secrets.

The family had mistaken convergence for one conspiracy.

Then Grace gave Victoria a box Alexander left before death.

Inside:

letters.

One addressed to Victoria.

Written when she was twenty-five.

Never delivered.

My daughter,

If Evelyn ever tells you I abandoned you, know that I stayed away because Richard threatened Natalie.

Victoria stopped reading.

Richard had used Alexander’s legitimate daughter to keep him away from Victoria.

Another layer.

But the final letter mattered most.

Alexander wrote:

The account is not for Natalie’s future child.

If such a child ever exists, he should never inherit it.

The money belongs to someone else.

Victoria stared.

Noah’s $310 million trust had been created using stolen funds.

May you like

Alexander never intended Noah to keep it.

So why had Evelyn designed the trust to make Noah the beneficiary?
