Chapter 4 - Arthur’s Trust

Nobody sat down after that.

The kitchen became very still, except for Lucas humming to himself in the high chair and the coffee machine clicking as it cooled.

Julian looked from Ruth to me and back again.

“What withdrawals?”

Ruth opened the folder and removed two statements.

“Seventeen thousand dollars six months ago,” she said, “and sixty-seven thousand dollars eleven days ago.”

Chloe spoke first.

“That’s impossible.”

“I agree,” Ruth said. “Which is why I’m here.”

Julian took the statements from her and scanned them.

“What is this account?”

For a moment, I just stared at him.

“You don’t know?”

He looked up. “Know what?”

Ruth answered for me.

“Your father, Arthur Foster, created an education trust for Maya and Lucas before he died. Eleanor is the acting trustee. Daniel and I are successor contacts in case of emergency. The trust pays for school, medical needs, and future tuition.”

Julian’s confusion seemed genuine.

“No one told me there was money set aside.”

“I told Chloe when Maya was born,” I said quietly.

All eyes turned to her.

Chloe gave a quick laugh. “You mentioned something vague years ago.”

“I gave you the trust summary packet.”

“You talk about so many papers, Eleanor.”

Daniel stepped forward before I could answer.

“There is more,” he said.

He drew out a second document and placed it in front of Julian.

“This is your father’s family support agreement.”

Julian read the title, frowning deeper.

“When Arthur died, Eleanor became primary controller of the Foster Family Support Trust. That trust provides a monthly distribution to you, specifically for mortgage assistance, children’s school costs, and limited household support.”

Julian stared at him.

“What monthly distribution?”

“The transfer that hits your account on the third business day of every month,” Ruth said. “Twenty-four hundred dollars.”

Julian looked as though someone had slapped him.

“That isn’t from Dad’s pension?”

“No,” I said. “It’s from the trust your father set up. I continued it because he asked me to help you while the children were young.”

Julian slowly lowered himself into a chair.

Across from him, Chloe remained standing.

“That’s ridiculous,” she snapped. “You never told us she controlled any of that.”

Daniel’s tone cooled.

“Mrs. Foster, the trust documents were sent to your home twice. Once after Arthur’s death. Once after the birth of your second child.”

Chloe said nothing.

Maya was listening now.

I did not want her hearing this.

“Sweetheart,” I said gently, “would you take Lucas into the family room and build his train track for Grandma? I’ll come in a few minutes.”

Maya hesitated, then nodded and led her brother away.

As soon as they disappeared around the corner, Daniel continued.

“Under Article Seven, discretionary distributions may be suspended if the trustee believes there has been attempted financial exploitation, coercion, or an effort to establish involuntary control over Eleanor’s personal affairs without medical basis.”

Julian’s head snapped up.

Chloe finally understood.

“You can’t do that,” she said.

“I can,” I answered.

She looked at me with something very close to panic.

“You’d punish the children because of a misunderstanding?”

“The children will continue to be protected,” I said. “What will stop is your access to my generosity.”

Ruth slid over another sheet.

“There is also the matter of these two withdrawals,” she said. “Both were authorized using an e-signature coded to Eleanor’s trustee login.”

“I didn’t authorize them.”

“We know,” said Ruth. “The access came from an IP address registered to this house.”

Silence.

Then Julian turned, very slowly, toward Chloe.

“Did you do this?”

She crossed her arms.

“If I had, maybe it was for household expenses.”

“With the children’s trust?”

“We needed money.”

Julian pushed his chair back so fast it scraped the tile.

“You used their school fund?”

Her eyes flashed.

“Don’t look at me like that. Half the time you don’t even know what’s happening in your own house.”

I saw something then that I had missed for years.

This was not new between them.

This was just the first time I was watching without illusions.

Daniel closed the folder.

“There will be no more discussion until the funds are formally traced,” he said. “And there is one more thing.”

He took out a printed screenshot.

An online guardianship intake form.

Applicant: Chloe Foster.

Proposed subject: Eleanor Foster.

Julian’s face emptied.

Chloe’s mouth opened.

And for the first time since I arrived a week earlier, she had nothing clever to say.
