Chapter 8 - The Man in Rosa’s Apartment

We were already inside the secure apartment when the alert appeared.
But Rosa’s original apartment was supposed to be empty.
Agent Hale sent officers.
They found a man sitting at Rosa’s kitchen table.
Alone.
He surrendered immediately.
Daniel Ward.
I watched through an encrypted video call.
He looked into the camera.
“Hello, Mom.”
My heart stopped.
Rosa caught my shoulder.
I could not answer.
Daniel requested DNA testing.
Federal agents collected samples.
Twenty-four hours later, the result arrived.
99.99 percent maternal match.
David.
My son.
Alive.
I vomited.
Then cried until my body hurt.
Thirty years of grief shattered in a single laboratory report.
Our first meeting happened under federal supervision.
David entered slowly.
He did not call me Mom again.
I studied his face.
Found pieces of my father.
My former husband.
Me.
“Where were you?”
David sat down.
“Thomas took me.”
The room went silent.
“Why?”
“He believed my father was going to kill me.”
“My husband?”
David nodded.
According to Thomas, my former husband had become unstable after discovering financial irregularities connected to Shaw Meridian’s early technology.
He planned to disappear with David.
Thomas intervened.
The boating accident was staged.
He hid David.
I stared.
“He let me believe my child was dead?”
“Yes.”
“For thirty years?”
David’s eyes hardened.
“He said it was the only way to keep you alive.”
“From whom?”
David looked toward Agent Hale.
“Thomas stopped trusting his own story years ago.”
That was why he rebuilt Orpheus.
Not for blackmail.
At first.
He wanted to reconstruct the financial trail surrounding David’s disappearance.
But someone hijacked the system.
“Adrian?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
David hesitated.
“Adrian was searching for the same person.”
I almost laughed.
“Adrian kidnapped Thomas.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Thomas contacted Adrian.”
The entire narrative shifted.
David explained that Thomas discovered someone inside Shaw Meridian was manipulating Adrian’s accounts, making his theft appear larger and pushing him toward increasingly desperate decisions.
Adrian was guilty.
But someone was amplifying his crimes.
Someone wanted Adrian to destroy me.
“Why?”
David looked directly at me.
“To make you activate the contingency trust.”
My blood chilled.
The trust was not merely money.
Its activation triggered an old corporate succession protocol.
A protocol connected to Orpheus.
I turned toward Samuel.
He went pale.
“What?”
Samuel whispered:
“The red protocol.”
I had almost forgotten.
If the Shaw trust activated under conditions of incapacity or family fraud, control of certain legacy security systems automatically transferred to a sealed trustee.
“Who is the trustee?”
Samuel began searching.
Then stopped.
The trustee identity had been changed.
Eighteen months earlier.
Same forged signature.
Same date David was inserted as beneficiary.
Agent Hale asked:
“Who controls it now?”
May you like
Samuel looked up.
“Celeste.”
