Chapter 6 - The Doctor Who Knew Too Much

Marcus moved first.

David stopped him.

“No.”

His voice was weak.

Still enough.

Dr. Cole closed the door.

“I assume you've found Amelia's records.”

Nobody answered.

He looked at Chloe.

Then at me.

“Remarkable.”

I stepped in front of her.

“Don’t look at my daughter.”

Cole smiled faintly.

“Her biology is what brought all of you together.”

David tried getting out of bed.

Dr. Winters pushed him back.

“You’re not tearing your surgical repair because you're angry.”

David looked at Cole.

“Did you cause the hemorrhage?”

“No.”

“Did you expect it?”

“Yes.”

That was almost worse.

Cole explained.

Someone had altered David’s postoperative medication.

Not enough to look obvious.

Enough to increase bleeding risk.

Cole caught it late.

He operated.

But whoever planned the attempt knew David’s rare blood profile would complicate rescue.

Meaning they knew his medical history intimately.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus scoffed.

“Convenient.”

Cole ignored him.

Then:

“But I know why Natasha was contacted.”

Dr. Winters stiffened.

“I contacted her.”

“Yes.”

“Based on emergency records.”

“Records I placed there eight years ago.”

I stared.

“What?”

Cole had known about my pregnancy.

Margaret told him.

He secretly entered my name into David’s emergency profile.

Why?

“In case the child inherited the Carter antigen pattern.”

“You used Chloe as backup blood?”

“No.”

His tone sharpened.

“I made sure if David ever faced a compatible-blood crisis, the system would locate the only likely relative outside Carter control.”

Me.

Chloe wasn't expected.

I brought her because of her rare type.

That part was mine.

So who tracked her?

Cole didn’t know.

Then David asked:

“Where is Amelia?”

Cole looked at Marcus.

“Alive.”

Marcus sat down.

The word broke him.

“Where?”

“Protected.”

“By whom?”

“Her own choice.”

Amelia had escaped Vincent’s facility at seventeen.

Cole helped.

He created a new identity.

Sent her away.

She built a life.

Never contacted the Carters.

“She thinks I abandoned her.”

Marcus whispered.

“No.”

Cole shook his head.

“She knows exactly what happened.”

“Then why stay away?”

“Because Vincent's research survived him.”

The Carter medical registry never died.

Someone continued it.

Patients.

Descendants.

Rare bloodlines.

Including Amelia’s possible children.

Including David.

And now Chloe.

“Who controls it?”

Cole looked at Margaret.

“That’s what I hoped she knew.”

She didn’t.

Then Chloe said:

“Can we go?”

I hugged her.

“Yes.”

David watched.

Pain in his face.

Not physical.

Then Cole spoke again.

“There is something else.”

Of course.

“Amelia has a daughter.”

Marcus looked up.

“How old?”

“Thirty.”

“Where?”

Cole hesitated.

Then looked directly at Dr. Winters.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Elena Winters stopped breathing.

Marcus whispered:

“No.”

Dr. Winters stared at Cole.

“What are you doing?”

He said:

“You deserve to know.”

Then to Marcus:

“Dr. Elena Winters is Amelia Carter’s daughter.”

The surgeon who had been trying to save David was his half-niece.

Marcus’s granddaughter.

And she had apparently walked into the Carter family without knowing any of it.

Dr. Winters laughed in disbelief.

“My mother’s name is Amy Winters.”

Cole nodded.

“Amelia Carter.”

Her face emptied.

Then the hospital alarms suddenly sounded.

Not David’s monitor.

Building security.

A voice announced an emergency lockdown.

Cole looked toward the hallway.

“What happened?”

A nurse ran in.

“There’s an armed man on the pediatric floor.”

My body went cold.

Chloe had been there ten minutes earlier.

Then the nurse added:

“He’s asking for Natasha Simmons’s daughter.”
