Chapter 6 - Claire’s Sister

Emily Bennett was seventeen when Claire disappeared.
Troubled.
Brilliant.
Fiercely attached to her older sister.
And, according to Rachel’s files, deeply involved with Charles Hale.
Not romantically.
Operationally.
Charles recruited vulnerable teenagers to move information and money because adults rarely suspected them.
Anna had tried escaping the same network years earlier.
Emily entered it willingly.
At first.
Then tried leaving.
Claire discovered what she was doing.
They argued.
Emily drove Claire away from the mansion that night.
The car crashed.
For eleven years Claire remembered only rain.
Headlights.
Emily crying.
Then nothing.
Rachel’s file contained a recovered traffic camera.
Emily was driving.
Claire was passenger.
A second car followed.
Black-stone ring visible on the driver’s hand when he leaned through the window at a toll booth.
Charles Hale.
Rachel’s father.
Emily did not deliberately crash Claire.
She was fleeing Charles.
Rachel’s statement that “Emily did” was technically true in the sense Emily drove.
But incomplete.
Again, context.
Claire watched the footage.
“My sister was trying to save me.”
“Maybe,” Mara said.
Claire nodded.
Maybe.
They would not turn possibility into fact.
The car left the road.
Claire survived.
Emily disappeared.
Charles staged Emily’s death using another unidentified body.
Rachel helped move Claire to Oregon under a false discharge procedure.
Then told Ethan nothing.
Ethan asked:
“Why did Rachel marry me?”
The question sounded almost childish.
Claire understood.
If Rachel first entered his life while hiding Claire, had anything between them been real?
Rachel’s journals answered slowly.
At first she watched Ethan because Charles believed Claire might contact him.
Rachel wanted to intercept any message.
Then Charles died.
Rachel could have told Ethan.
She did not.
Because by then she had fallen in love with him.
That was worse in a different way.
She chose silence partly from fear of losing him.
Not noble protection anymore.
Selfishness.
Rachel knew it.
Her journal:
EVERY DAY I WAIT MAKES THE TRUTH CRUELER.
AND EVERY DAY I LOVE HIM MORE MAKES ME WAIT AGAIN.
Ethan cried quietly.
He did not stop loving Rachel.
But his memory of their marriage changed.
That was grief’s second cruelty.
The dead could still disappoint you.
Lily sat beside him.
“Did Mommy love you?”
“Yes.”
This time Ethan answered without hesitation.
“And Claire?”
Claire looked away.
Ethan said:
“That’s Claire’s question.”
Another lesson.
Do not answer for others.
Mara focused on Emily.
If Emily was alive and contacting Lily, why stage Claire beneath the floor?
Why make Lily punish Ethan?
Claire believed Emily blamed him.
But evidence contradicted that.
Emily knew Ethan had not caused the crash.
Rachel knew too.
Perhaps Emily wanted Ethan to remember something else.
The recorder from the hidden room provided the next clue.
Mara played it.
Hours before Claire was placed there, two voices spoke.
Emily.
And Claire.
Claire stared.
Her own voice.
“You promised Ethan wouldn’t be hurt.”
Emily:
“He won’t.”
Claire:
“And Lily?”
“She needs to see it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Ethan stepped away.
“You knew.”
Claire began shaking.
“I don’t remember.”
“Stop.”
“I swear.”
“You staged being restrained?”
“I woke up restrained.”
“But before that you agreed to something.”
Apparently.
Claire’s missing memory was not limited to eleven years ago.
Someone had interfered with her memory recently.
Toxicology found a sedative in her blood.
A medication known to cause fragmented recall.
Claire had voluntarily entered the chamber.
Then someone drugged her.
Again, victim and participant.
She had agreed to a plan.
Not necessarily the plan that actually occurred.
Ethan asked:
“Why would you agree to frighten Lily?”
Claire cried.
“I don’t know.”
The recording answered.
Claire’s voice:
“If Lily sees me, Ethan will finally open Rachel’s room.”
Emily:
“Exactly.”
Claire had agreed because Emily convinced her Ethan possessed Rachel’s hidden evidence and refused to reveal it.
Claire believed staging the discovery would force him to confront the past.
But Ethan did not know about the safe.
Emily manipulated Claire using another false assumption.
Claire whispered:
“She used me.”
Mara corrected gently:
“She manipulated you. You still agreed to deceive them.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Important.
Manipulation did not erase agency.
Then the recording reached its final seconds.
Claire said:
“I won’t let you turn Lily against her father.”
Emily laughed.
“I don’t need to.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily already saw what Ethan did to Rachel.”
Ethan froze.
The bad night.
Rachel injured.
Ethan carrying her.
Lily watching.
Emily continued:
“You still think Rachel collapsed because of the crash.”
Silence.
Then:
“She didn’t.”
Ethan leaned toward the recorder.
“What?”
Emily’s voice:
“Rachel survived that crash.”
A pause.
“What killed her happened three hours later.”
Claire’s recorded voice whispered:
“What happened?”
May you like
Emily answered:
“Ask Ethan what he put in her glass.”
