Chapter 11 - Two Mothers

We found Charlotte in the ballroom.

Lucy, Mia, and Chloe sat together on a couch.

Safe.

Terrified.

Charlotte stood beside them.

No weapon visible.

That didn't make her harmless.

Claire entered holding Ellie.

The twins stared at each other.

Same face.

Different lives.

Charlotte smiled.

“Hello, Claire.”

Claire's answer was immediate.

“Give me my daughters.”

“Our daughters.”

The words struck harder than shouting.

Charlotte had carried Mia and Chloe as a surrogate after Claire's medical complications.

At least, that was the original plan.

Embryos had been created from Claire and Michael.

But Mercer manipulated the records.

One embryo belonged genetically to Charlotte.

Another possibly to Adrian Hayes.

Nobody knew which child belonged biologically to whom.

Charlotte became attached during pregnancy.

Catherine promised the arrangement would be legally clarified.

Then Catherine died.

Mercer exploited the confusion.

Charlotte came to believe Claire had stolen two children from her.

“Why didn't you come to me?” Claire asked.

“I did.”

“What?”

“Three years ago.”

Claire remembered nothing.

Miriam had been there.

The blue room.

Medication.

Mercer staged the meeting to make Claire appear unstable.

Then erased enough of the aftermath that Claire doubted herself.

Charlotte had been manipulated too.

I saw realization spreading across both sisters.

Mercer hadn't merely exploited frightened children.

He built wars between adults.

Michael stepped forward.

“Charlotte, let the girls leave.”

Her expression hardened.

“You don't give me orders.”

“No.”

He lowered his hands.

“But they shouldn't have to choose.”

That sentence reached her.

The girls were crying now.

Lucy stood.

“I choose Mommy.”

Charlotte's face crumpled.

Then Lucy walked toward her.

Not Claire.

Charlotte.

She hugged her.

“And Mommy.”

She turned toward Claire.

“Both.”

Adults had spent years creating legal structures, false identities, secret rooms, and custody wars.

A seven-year-old solved the emotional part with one word.

Both.

Charlotte started crying.

Then a gunshot shattered the chandelier.

Everyone dropped.

Mercer.

He had freed himself.

He stood in the doorway holding a pistol.

His calm mask was gone.

“You sentimental idiots.”

He aimed toward Charlotte.

Michael tackled Claire and the children behind a table.

I moved.

Mercer fired again.

Glass exploded.

My guards entered from the side.

He retreated.

Then grabbed the one child standing closest to the doorway.

Chloe.

Claire screamed.

Mercer dragged Chloe into the corridor.

“Follow me and she pays for it!”

Nobody fired.

He disappeared.

Charlotte collapsed.

“No.”

She looked at Claire.

For the first time, they weren't rivals.

They were two mothers watching the same nightmare.

I stood.

“Where would he go?”

Charlotte looked at me.

“The archive.”

“Where?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then Ellie whispered:

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

“Mr. Mercer showed us.”

“When?”

“In the blue room.”

She pointed toward Lake Michigan beyond the windows.

“The place under the water.”

Michael's face changed.

Catherine had built one final archive beneath an abandoned boathouse on the shoreline.

If Mercer reached it, he could destroy every remaining record.

Or sell them.

We ran.

Then my phone rang.

Ethan.

I answered.

“Dad.”

“What?”

His voice trembled.

“Uncle Raymond is gone.”

My blood cooled.

“So is Mom's wooden box.”

“Stay with security.”

“Dad…”

“What?”

“I opened the box before he took it.”

Pause.

“There was another letter.”

“What did it say?”

Ethan whispered:

“Mom said if Mercer ever finds the underwater archive, don't stop him from opening it.”

I stopped walking.

May you like

“Why?”

“Because it's a trap.”
