Chapter 8 - The Woman Beside the Hydrangeas
Claire wasn’t my cousin by blood.
She married Daniel five years earlier.
Nobody knew her grandfather was Robert Holloway.
Including Claire.
At least that was what she claimed.
DNA confirmed the relationship.
The property trust potentially made Claire heir to approximately six million dollars.
Suddenly her false witness statement mattered more.
Pierce questioned her again.
This time Claire broke.
Helen had approached her three months earlier.
She revealed the family connection.
Then promised Claire something.
“If you protect Rebecca after the shower, I’ll make sure you receive what belongs to you.”
Claire claimed she didn’t know what “after the shower” meant.
She thought Helen planned an argument.
Then she watched Lily leave Helen’s hands.
“And you still lied?”
Claire cried.
“I panicked.”
Everyone panicked.
Everyone lied.
Everyone had a reason.
Except Lily.
Six weeks old and somehow the only innocent person in the entire conspiracy.
Then Daniel discovered his wife had deleted messages.
He gave police access to their shared tablet.
One recovered conversation:
Claire:
I won’t help if the baby gets hurt.
Helen:
Nobody is hurting Lily.
Claire:
Then what is the fire for?
Helen:
A symbol.
Claire:
Of what?
Helen:
The end of Margaret’s place in this family.
That message proved Helen planned something involving the fire.
But perhaps not the throw.
Then another conversation surfaced.
Claire to Evan:
Your mother is losing control.
Evan:
Keep her calm until Saturday.
Claire:
What happens Saturday?
Evan:
James finally sees who he married.
That matched Rebecca’s story.
Evan wanted the shower to expose Helen.
So why help fabricate a psychiatric report against me?
His answer was disturbing.
He wanted to frighten Dad.
He believed if Dad saw how far Helen was willing to go, he would leave.
Evan had been manipulating his mother while pretending to help her.
He wanted revenge for being abandoned.
The guardianship petition.
The fake evaluation.
The staged confrontation.
All of it was bait.
He expected Helen to reveal her obsession publicly.
But Helen escalated beyond his plan.
Or so he claimed.
Then investigators recovered the complete video from Daniel’s phone.
Not just Rebecca’s call.
The recording began thirty seconds before Lily was thrown.
We watched frame by frame.
Helen holding Lily.
Me approaching.
Rebecca blocking me.
Then something I had missed.
Claire stood behind Helen.
She leaned close.
Said something.
Helen’s face changed.
“What did she say?”
Audio enhancement took hours.
Finally:
Claire whispered:
“James gave the evidence to Margaret.”
That was false.
Dad had never given me the safe-deposit documents.
But Helen believed it.
Three seconds later, she raised Lily.
“You betrayed this family.”
Then threw her.
She wasn’t only punishing me for having the first grandchild.
She thought I possessed evidence that could destroy her family’s reputation.
Claire had deliberately provoked her.
Why?
Six million dollars?
Revenge for Robert?
Something else?
Police went to arrest Claire for her role in the conspiracy.
She was gone.
Daniel found a note on their kitchen table.
I’m sorry. Ask Margaret what Helen did to Robert.
Then Daniel noticed something missing.
His handgun.
