Chapter 12 - The Veteran Beside the Jukebox

Walter had recognized my challenge coin instantly.

Not because he respected what it represented.

Because he had been waiting for it.

The harmless old veteran beside the jukebox had positioned himself perfectly.

He was the first person to identify me publicly.

The first to say “Lieutenant Hale.”

The first to turn a bar fight into a military mystery.

He had triggered everything.

“Find him,” Keene ordered.

Voss shook his head.

“You won’t.”

“Why?”

“Walter Briggs isn’t his name.”

His real name was Walter Cole.

Nathan Cole’s older brother.

The room went silent.

Nathan was the public face.

Walter had built the network.

A forgettable intelligence officer.

Then a forgettable retiree.

Then a gray-haired man drinking alone in a Colorado tavern.

Stay invisible long enough and people stopped imagining you could matter.

I almost admired it.

Almost.

“Nathan is bait,” Voss said.

“Walter is cleaning the network before the ledger surfaces.”

That explained Nathan’s strange behavior.

Walking into cameras.

Leaving obvious messages.

Making himself visible.

Maybe he wasn’t running.

Maybe he was trying to be caught.

Keene understood simultaneously.

“He wants protective custody.”

Voss nodded.

“From his brother.”

We found Nathan Cole before Walter.

He surrendered.

Immediately.

“I want immunity.”

Keene laughed.

“No.”

“Then Thomas Hale dies.”

My fists tightened.

Nathan looked at me.

“Your father is alive.”

“Where?”

“Walter has him.”

“You said you did.”

“I needed Walter believing I still controlled the situation.”

Nathan was afraid.

Genuinely afraid.

“Why would Walter kill my father?”

“Because Thomas knows the ledger’s final name.”

“What name?”

Nathan looked toward Keene.

“The person who ordered Black Cedar compromised.”

“Walter?”

“No.”

“Who?”

“I want a deal.”

Keene refused.

Nathan smiled bitterly.

“Then you’re going to lose him.”

I stepped forward.

“You walked into my barn.”

“Yes.”

“You knew cameras were recording.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted federal attention.”

“Yes.”

“Then you already decided to betray Walter.”

His smile disappeared.

“Tell me the name.”

Nathan studied me.

Then whispered:

“Elias Voss.”

Every eye turned.

Voss did not move.

“That’s a lie.”

Nathan laughed.

“Ask him why he survived when everyone else was supposed to die.”

Voss stepped forward.

“Because I discovered your ambush.”

“No.”

Nathan looked at me.

“He survived because Walter warned him.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because Voss was never supposed to die.”

Voss reached for Nathan.

Agents blocked him.

Nathan shouted:

“Black Cedar wasn’t compromised to steal technology!”

He pointed at Voss.

“It was designed to erase Thomas Hale’s evidence—and Elias Voss helped build the operation.”

I looked at my former commander.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Voss said nothing.

For the first time since the challenge coin hit the tavern floor—

the man who had taught me to read every opponent’s movement refused to meet my eyes.
