Chapter 12 - Claire Finally Said Why She Hated Rachel
Claire requested meeting with Ethan.
Attorneys present.
No children.
She said:
“I hated Rachel before I married Mark.”
Ethan was surprised.
Why?
At seventeen Claire was dating boy whose father worked at Bennett Development.
During Peter scandal, classmates mocked Claire because Ethan’s family had begun socializing with Dawsons? Hmm Claire is Ethan's sister, not Bennett yet. She may have known Rachel through Ethan later, but before Mark maybe not.
Let's make hatred started when Ethan began dating Rachel. Claire had been close to Margaret Bennett through Mark; Bennetts warned Rachel was Dawson’s daughter and might be using Ethan to get close to house. Claire believed.
Then Rachel confronted Claire privately:
“Your husband’s family destroyed mine and you’re helping them repeat the lie.”
Claire felt accused of something she didn’t do.
She doubled down.
“I told myself she was marrying you to get house back.”
“Did she ever ask me for it?”
“No.”
“Did she ask me for money?”
“No.”
“Did she sue Bennetts?”
“No.”
“Then what evidence did you have?”
Claire cried.
“None.”
That was answer.
She hated Rachel because accepting Rachel’s version would mean:
Mark’s family wrong,
Claire had repeated false accusation,
and Mark’s father had protected business over truth.
It was easier to make Rachel manipulative.
After Rachel died, Emma became reminder.
Then Claire’s own financial stress turned prejudice into perceived threat.
When Emma told Chloe:
“Mommy used to live here,”
Claire heard:
“This house belongs to me.”
Emma meant:
“My mom was a little girl here.”
Claire projected.
Then Claire admitted she had opened the iron hatch before party.
Why?
Utility crews had inspected drainage two days earlier.
Claire kept hatch unlocked because repairman returning.
So dropping Emma was spontaneous—not preplanned trap.
That mattered legally, but did not reduce cruelty.
She dragged child there in anger.
Why stomp gift?
She saw photo of Emma/Chloe and “Cousins Forever.”
Claire wanted separation.
Her daughter belonged to Bennett side.
Emma to Dawson side.
She literally tried to destroy connection.
Then she heard herself say it aloud and broke down.
“My daughter is half Hayes too.”
Exactly.
Claire’s own “blood” logic was incoherent.
She and Ethan share parents.
Emma is Ethan’s daughter.
Chloe is Claire’s daughter.
The cousins share Hayes blood.
Claire’s insult was never genetic reasoning.
It was inherited social hatred.
Then Margaret apologized privately to Emma through approved letter.
Not “we love you.”
Specific:
I told myself Peter Dawson’s conviction made it acceptable to speak badly about Rachel. I was wrong. Adults’ accusations should never have become words aimed at you.
Emma asked Ethan to read twice.
“Is Grandma Margaret my grandma?”
No, Margaret is Chloe’s grandmother, not Emma’s. Good correction. Ethan said:
“She’s Chloe’s grandma.”
“Then why does she care what I think?”
“Because she hurt you too.”
Emma nodded.
Children understand accountability.
Then Richard met Peter Dawson’s former attorney.
The attorney had kept one sealed note Peter asked not to send until “Bennett family finally admits money didn’t go to me.”
Now.
Peter’s note:
Richard,
I don’t want your house.
I don’t want your company.
I want Rachel to stop lowering her voice when she says her last name.
Richard cried.
He had failed.
Then he agreed Bennett Development would publicly correct historical statements and fund independent restitution under existing reserve.
No NDA.
No private hush.
The house itself remained Ethan’s pending title review.
No grand transfer.
Then lender formally called Claire’s loan.
Her business likely insolvent.
Would Richard rescue?
He asked Ethan.
Ethan said:
“That’s between you, Claire and professionals. Don’t make rescue another secret.”
Richard used personal funds to support Chloe’s necessities directly but did not pay Claire’s business debt without restructuring.
Claire filed business reorganization.
Painful.
Not annihilation.
Consequences without melodrama.
Then Mark’s blue file contained one unopened envelope addressed to Chloe.
For her eighteenth birthday.
Not yet.
They left sealed.
