Chapter 10 - The Voice the Kennel Camera Caught Too Clearly

The conservatorship petition might have frightened me once. Before the kennel. Before the camera. Before the lawyer and the detective and the doctor and my daughter standing beside me with all the fragments Jason never imagined would fit together.

Now it felt less like an unstoppable threat and more like the last move of a man who had mistaken persistence for inevitability.

Still, it was dangerous. Conservatorship accusations carry a stain even when they fail. Jason knew that. If he could turn the case into a mutual family dispute instead of an attempted seizure of power, he might salvage something.

So Samuel prepared carefully. Claire gathered every message Jason had sent. Detective Vega produced the camera logs and the cleaned audio. Dr. Cho’s report was attached. The bank and notary statements were preserved. Jason’s attorney could argue motive, misunderstanding, frustration—but not ignorance.

The most damaging evidence remained the kennel recording.

Not the muddy water.

Not the slap.

Not even the blood.

It was the clean, unmistakable structure of coercion in his own words.

Say you fell.

You’ve lived there long enough.

That house should be mine.

Walk through that gate with her, and you don’t come back.

When Samuel played those lines back for me in his office, something in me finally settled. There are moments in long family wars when you stop hoping the other person will come to his senses and start recognizing that the truth no longer needs his cooperation.

Jason, however, kept trying to rewrite it.

He claimed he was overwhelmed.

He claimed he had “snapped verbally,” not physically.

He claimed the kennel was the nearest place to get me out of the mud, which was such a stupid lie that even his own attorney looked pained while saying it.

Then Detective Vega called with one more development.

A neighbor across the alley had a partial view of my yard. Her exterior camera didn’t capture the kennel itself, but it did catch Jason dragging the basin and papers outside earlier that afternoon.

He had staged the scene before forcing me into it.

The conservatorship hearing was set for the following Tuesday.

And on the Monday night before it, Claire found a text Jason had sent at 11:08 a.m. on the day of the attack.

By tonight, this will finally be handled.
