Chapter 8 - The Worst Thing
I refused private.
We met with attorneys and mediator present.
Dennis looked thinner.
No Hawaii tan left.
He said:
“The attic wasn’t worst.”
My chest tightened.
“What was?”
“I made her believe Rebecca was dead.”
We knew partly.
But deliberate extent?
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she kept asking when Mommy was coming.”
“So you said she died?”
“At first I said sick.”
“Then?”
“She tried calling 911 from old phone.”
“What happened?”
“I told her if she kept trying, police would take her somewhere worse.”
I gripped table.

“She asked if Rebecca woke up. I said no.”
So “went to sleep and couldn’t wake up” came directly.
“Why?”
“Because I thought if she stopped asking, house would be calmer.”
That was worst.
Psychological control.
Then:
“Did Trisha know?”
“She heard once. She told me not to say dead. She said say Rebecca abandoned her.”
Two competing lies.
Sophie ended believing both fragments:
Mom asleep/dead.
Mom left.
Then Dennis said:
“I also told Sophie you didn’t want her.”
“I know.”

He swallowed.
“Specific.”
Maybe harsh but necessary.
“I’m sorry I used your house without permission.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I lied about Rebecca.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I kept Sophie from you because I wanted control.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I put her upstairs to protect my marriage and money.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I left her there.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I made her believe nobody wanted her.”
That one broke voice.
Then:
“I’m sorry I called you for cleaner because I thought Rosa would find her after we were gone and I could pretend she hid herself.”
I froze.

He did intend discovery.

He scheduled cleaner specifically.
But he gave too little supplies and hid child behind wardrobe.
