Chapter 15 - The File Vincent Wanted Us to See

Caleb moved toward the monitor.

I stopped him.

“No.”

His eyes met mine.

“We need to know.”

Vincent smiled.

Exactly what he wanted.

Division.

Doubt.

Chaos.

Stay focused.

Roman ordered his technical team to stop the upload.

They couldn’t.

Four minutes.

Sebastian stepped toward Vincent.

“Give me the shutdown key.”

“You still think you’re patriarch.”

“No.”

Sebastian looked toward Roman.

“I learned who replaced me.”

Roman’s expression shifted.

For the first time, Sebastian publicly surrendered the role he had spent his life protecting.

Vincent hated it.

Good.

Hannah noticed.

“He needs attention.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Everything he does. The secrets. The countdown. He wants everyone watching him.”

She pointed toward the monitors.

“What if the countdown isn’t the threat?”

Roman understood.

“It’s distraction.”

Giovanni’s men searched the room.

Behind one server rack they found a portable drive actively copying the trust archive.

Vincent wasn’t trying to expose the empire.

He was stealing the only clean copy before federal seizure.

Three minutes.

Roman disconnected the drive.

The countdown continued.

Vincent’s confidence finally cracked.

“There are redundancies.”

“Probably,” Hannah said.

“But now you look nervous.”

Federal agents restrained him.

Vincent shouted:

“You need me!”

Nobody answered.

Two minutes.

Then Caleb’s file opened automatically.

A video began.

Younger Vincent.

Speaking to someone off-camera.

Keep Caleb close to the Parker girl. If she is Sebastian’s daughter, their child will force the trust issue.

My stomach turned.

Caleb stared at me.

“I didn’t know.”

I believed him.

Because the next recording proved it.

Caleb confronting Vincent after discovering I was being monitored.

Caleb shouting:

“Emily isn’t part of this family. Leave her alone.”

Then Vincent:

“She became part of it the moment you loved her.”

Caleb had not manipulated me.

He had been manipulated too.

One minute.

Roman’s team isolated the upload.

Thirty seconds.

Vincent suddenly laughed.

“You’re all looking at the wrong secret.”

Roman stared at him.

“What?”

“The Callahan archive isn’t what Sebastian feared.”

Ten seconds.

“Then what?”

Vincent looked at Lily’s photograph on my phone.

“Her.”

My blood froze.

Three.

Two.

Roman’s technician severed the final server.

The countdown stopped at one.

Silence.

Vincent was taken into custody.

But his last word followed me.

Her.

Weeks later, the Callahan world began collapsing and rebuilding simultaneously.

Vincent faced federal charges.

Sebastian entered negotiations concerning decades of evidence.

Roman began separating legitimate businesses from everything Vincent had poisoned.

Hannah stayed near me.

Calling her my sister still felt strange.

But Lily solved that faster than either of us.

“Aunt Han.”

Hannah cried the first time.

Caleb and I did not simply become a family again.

Too much had happened.

He needed to explain eighteen months.

I needed time to decide whether explanation could become forgiveness.

But he showed up.

Every morning.

Every pediatric appointment.

Every nightmare.

He stopped disappearing.

Roman became something I never expected.

Uncle Roman.

The terrifying man who allegedly controlled half of Chicago now carried crackers in his coat because Lily became furious when hungry.

His guards pretended not to notice.

Three months later, I returned to Callahan Tower.

Not as a cleaner.

Roman offered me money.

I refused.

He offered me an executive position.

I laughed.

Finally, he offered something useful.

Access to Sebastian’s trust archive.

I wanted answers about my biological mother.

Hannah wanted them too.

We entered the secure room together.

Roman remained outside.

“This belongs to you.”

Inside were thousands of files.

We searched our mother’s name.

One result.

Restricted.

Hannah opened it.

A video appeared.

Our biological mother.

Young.

Alive.

Holding two newborn girls.

Me.

Hannah.

She looked into the camera.

“If my daughters ever see this, Vincent has probably failed.”

I grabbed Hannah’s hand.

The woman continued.

“Sebastian believes this archive exists to protect his empire.”

She smiled sadly.

“He’s wrong.”

Hannah whispered:

“What?”

Our mother leaned closer to the camera.

“I created it to destroy the Callahans if they ever came for my daughters.”

The video changed.

A list appeared.

Not criminal transactions.

Federal case numbers.

Witness identities.

Undercover operations.

Roman entered behind us.

His face went pale.

“This isn’t Dad’s archive.”

“No,” I whispered.

Then another file unlocked automatically.

LILY CALLAHAN.

My entire body went cold.

“That’s impossible.”

Lily had not existed when our mother recorded this.

Roman moved closer.

The file creation date was six years before Lily’s birth.

Hannah whispered:

“How can her name be here?”

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

If Emily’s first daughter is named Lily, initiate protocol immediately.

Nobody breathed.

My mother had predicted Lily’s name.

Except I had never chosen it.

Caleb had.

I turned toward him.

He stood in the doorway.

His face had gone white.

“Caleb?”

He stared at the screen.

“I never told you why I chose Lily.”

My heart began pounding.

“Why?”

He reached beneath his shirt and removed an old silver chain.

A tiny key hung from it.

“I’ve had this since I was nineteen.”

Roman stepped forward.

“Who gave it to you?”

Caleb looked at me.

“Your mother.”

Silence swallowed the room.

“You met my biological mother?”

“No.”

His voice shook.

“I met a woman who claimed she was.”

Hannah grabbed the desk.

“When?”

“After Lake Geneva.”

Roman’s expression hardened.

“That was almost ten years ago.”

Caleb nodded.

“She told me that someday I would meet a woman named Emily Parker.”

I stepped backward.

“No.”

“She told me if Emily ever had a daughter…”

His eyes dropped toward Lily’s file.

“…I had to name her Lily.”

I could barely speak.

“Why?”

Caleb inserted the tiny key into a hidden slot beneath the archive terminal.

A compartment opened.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

Below mine:

For Lily, when they finally tell Emily who Caleb really is.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Caleb seemed just as terrified.

“I don’t know.”

Roman took one controlled step toward his brother.

“Caleb.”

Then every light in Callahan Tower went out.

Emergency power activated.

Roman’s phone rang.

His security chief was shouting.

“Boss—we have a breach.”

“Where?”

“Executive floor.”

Roman looked toward the locked door.

We were on the executive floor.

A slow knock came from outside.

Three times.

Caleb stopped breathing.

I looked at him.

“What?”

“That knock.”

Another three knocks.

Caleb backed away from the door.

“I know it.”

“From where?”

His eyes remained fixed on the handle.

“The recovery facility.”

Roman drew his weapon.

“Who used it?”

Caleb whispered:

“The woman who kept telling me Vincent was lying.”

The door handle slowly turned.

“She said when Vincent was finally gone, she would come for Lily.”

I clutched my daughter.

“Who was she?”

Caleb looked at me.

“She called herself your mother.”

The door opened one inch.

A woman’s voice came from the darkness.

“Emily?”

Hannah grabbed my arm.

Roman raised his weapon.

The woman laughed softly.

Then said the one sentence that made Sebastian, standing behind us, drop his glass.

“Tell Roman to lower the gun. His mother taught him better than that.”

Roman went completely still.

His mother had supposedly been dead for twenty-six years.

The door slowly opened wider.

May you like

And before we could see the woman’s face—

everything went black.
