Claire expected Diane.
Maybe Robert.
Possibly Madison.
All obvious.
Ethan refused to reveal the name over the phone.
Jonathan was monitoring him.
Instead, he arranged to meet Claire at a twenty-four-hour diner.
Christmas night.
Madison insisted on coming.
Claire almost refused.
Then changed her mind.
Madison had been lied to too.
At the diner, Ethan looked miserable.
“I didn't date Madison because my father told me to.”
Madison stared at him.
“That's your opening?”
“I love you.”
“Your father just ordered you not to marry me.”
“I know.”
“And you stole from my storage unit.”
“I know.”
“Great Christmas.”
Claire interrupted.
“The page.”
Ethan handed it over.
Samuel Vale had one daughter.
Elizabeth Vale.
Born 1963.
Changed surname after adoption.
New name:
Elizabeth Diane Mercer.
Claire looked up.
Diane.
Her mother.
Samuel Vale was Diane’s biological father.
Diane herself apparently did not know until Arthur found adoption records in 2018.
That meant Arthur’s $6.4 million Northstar transfer was intended for Diane.
Restitution.
Not theft.
Why hide it?
Samuel’s original ownership had never been formalized.
Public disclosure could create lawsuits.
Arthur wanted to compensate Diane privately before correcting corporate history.
Did Diane receive the money?
No.
Northstar was hijacked before payment reached her.
Then who redirected it?
Ethan pointed to the bottom of the page.
Alternate distribution account.
Meridian Custodial Services.
Jonathan Cole’s company.
Claire felt the pieces lock.
Jonathan had advised Arthur.
He knew about Samuel.
He knew Northstar.
He redirected the $6.4 million?
Ethan nodded.
“My father says it wasn't theft.”
“What does he call taking someone else’s money?”
“Collateral.”
Jonathan claimed Arthur owed Meridian money from an old private financing arrangement.
No signed agreement had surfaced.
Arthur disputed it.
Jonathan diverted Northstar funds anyway.
Then used Claire’s forged authorization to make it appear internal.
Why Claire?
Because she was young.
Uninvolved.
If discovered, everyone would assume clerical misuse rather than sophisticated fraud.
Claire felt rage.
Then Ethan added:
“My father didn't create the signature.”
“Who did?”
“I don't know.”
Jonathan received the documents already signed.
From someone at Hale.
Back to family.
Then Madison asked the question no one expected from her.
“Did Mom ever get what Grandpa owed her?”
No.
Arthur intended to correct it after resolving Northstar.
Cancer intervened.
Thus Diane spent years believing Arthur had cheated her biological father and then refused restitution.
Her bitterness toward Arthur suddenly made sense.
But why resent Claire?
Because Arthur placed Claire in control of the trust containing assets partly built from Samuel’s work.
Diane saw Claire as inheriting authority over something that should partly have been hers.
Not entirely irrational.
But Claire still had not taken anything.
Then Ethan revealed Jonathan’s current plan.
Meridian’s $31 million Hale debt was not about ordinary repayment.
Jonathan wanted the company to default.
Then he could force restructuring.
Acquire voting influence.
And use the Samuel Vale dispute as leverage.
Why Madison?
At first, Jonathan encouraged Ethan because marriage could provide family access.
Then Ethan genuinely fell in love.
Jonathan lost control of the arrangement.
That was why he stopped the engagement.
Madison stared at Ethan.
“So I'm either a spoiled idiot or a corporate access point?”
Ethan answered quietly.
“To my father, maybe.”
“And to you?”
“The woman I was going to propose to without his permission.”
Madison started crying.
Claire had never seen her sister cry without trying to make someone feel guilty.
Then Claire noticed the missing ledger page contained another notation.
Arthur:
D.M. KNOWS ORIGINAL SIGNATURE SOURCE.
D.M.
Who?
Robert knew when Claire showed him later.
David Mercer.
Diane’s adoptive brother.
Claire’s uncle.
Dead five years.
But David had left behind a daughter.
