Chapter 10 - Martha Used Medical Safety as a Weapon Against Caleb—Then Ignored It Herself
The custody filings were brutal to read.
Not because Martha invented every concern.
Because she understood the language of medical responsibility perfectly when it served her.
Two years earlier, Caleb forgot to replace an expired epinephrine injector in Tommy’s school emergency kit before the new semester.
The school had a backup.
No reaction occurred.
Caleb replaced it the next morning.
Martha’s attorney nevertheless cited the incident in mediation as evidence Caleb needed “greater medical oversight.”
Caleb accepted the criticism.
He created a checklist afterward.
Martha called it proof he could not manage independently.
Then there was the inhaler refill.
The missed dentist appointment.
A time Caleb allowed Tommy to play soccer with a mild cough.

One message from Martha:
I cannot take Tommy in with the cast looking like this. Caleb will use the records.
Melissa replied:
That is not a legal reason to delay treatment. Take him to a physician now.
Martha:
You don’t understand what he does with documentation.

She delayed anyway.

Martha appeared increasingly unable to separate protecting her role as Tommy’s mother from protecting Tommy himself.

She thought those goals were identical.

Could he safely become temporary primary parent?

Review of work schedule.
Medical training.
His apartment renovation had finished.

But child welfare still required parenting support because Tommy would need complex follow-up and trauma care.
Caleb agreed without complaint.

Martha’s visits remained suspended pending treatment progress and Tommy’s therapeutic readiness.

She denied sending it.

Martha’s own mother, Eleanor.
The grandmother who had given investigators notes proving Martha ignored warnings.
Why would she help the case and then attack Caleb?
Because family loyalty is rarely clean.
Eleanor believed Martha had failed Tommy.
