Chapter 8 - Seven Clinics, Seven Stories
The fragmentation became one of the strongest nonviolent tools Richard used.
No fake identities.
No forged insurance cards.
Nothing sophisticated.
He simply chose different urgent cares and orthopedic offices.
Each injury became a new beginning.
At Clinic One:
Swing.
At Clinic Two:
Stairs.
At Clinic Three:
Bike.
At Clinic Four:
Playground.
Nobody saw cumulative contradiction unless records were manually requested.
When they were, parent history often copied forward.
Possible brittle-bone disorder.
Those four words became shield.
No confirmed diagnosis.
Yet once entered, later clinicians saw them and assumed someone upstream had verified.
Medical records can amplify uncertainty until it looks like fact.
The internal review across health systems exposed this.
One chart:
“History of OI per father.”

“Known bone fragility disorder.”

“Patient with recurrent fractures due to congenital condition.”
A rumor hardened in documentation.
No one intentionally falsified.

This became a real defense issue.

No.
Medical uncertainty did not erase behavioral evidence.
That was crucial.
Even if Tommy someday turned out to have mild fragility, forcing drills, hiding bruises, locking him, and lying about mechanisms remained relevant.

Do not claim Richard intentionally snapped seven bones.

Repeated physical abuse supported by specific disclosures/corroboration.

That narrower case was stronger.
Then Leah faced scrutiny too.

Could that have injured Tommy?
Yes.
Medical experts said a hard object trapped against skin under cast can cause pressure injury.
Tommy had bruising/irritation near area.
Was key responsible?
Possibly some pressure.
Leah’s protective act had risk.
She admitted.
“I made a bad choice because I was terrified nobody would listen.”

Child welfare team did not treat her as safe placement for Tommy immediately.

Then Richard's supervised visits remained suspended after coaching behavior.

No permanent parental rights termination yet.

He denied intentionally harming Tommy.

No doctor said that.
But kernel truth.
Then fundraiser donors learned.
Some defended Richard.
“He was devoted.”
“He took Tommy to every appointment.”
“He was always carrying him.”
That hurt Leah.
“People think care is visible,” she said. “Control can look like care from across a parking lot.”
Then one donor provided voicemail.
Richard crying:
I don’t know how many more fractures we can survive. I’m terrified I’ll lose him.
Was emotion fake?
Maybe not.
Abusers can genuinely fear consequences of harm they cause.
Human contradiction.

Grace had been kept away because Richard said Tommy’s immune system/bone condition made travel difficult.
She lived two states away.

Tommy remembered her.
“Mom’s sister.”
He smiled.

Instead Grace told investigators something about Richard after Melissa died.
He became obsessed with preventing Tommy from “turning soft.”

Richard resented.

So “fragile bones” narrative may have evolved after injuries began, but underlying abuse came from “toughening.”

Privately weak must be corrected.
The contradiction actually served Richard.
If Tommy cried in public:

cowardice.
No version allowed Tommy to define pain himself.
Then Detective Chen found a voice note recorded accidentally by Richard’s smart speaker? Could be too convenient. Maybe home security camera audio.
Leah had access to indoor camera cloud. One clip preserved from hallway:
Tommy crying in basement doorway.
Richard:
“If you tell them I made you jump, they’ll take you away somewhere worse.”
Tommy:
“I want Aunt Grace.”
Richard:
“She doesn’t want a broken kid.”
