Chapter 10 - Mia Refused to Be Evidence

Mia contacted Noah again.

This time the FBI let Ethan speak.

Noah typed first:

DAD IS HERE.

Mia:

I DON'T TRUST HIM.

Ethan asked Noah to type:

YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

Long pause.

Then:

GOOD ANSWER.

A secure video connection opened.

Mia appeared.

Same girl from the chair.

No restraints.

Dark hoodie.

Hair tied back.

No visible injuries.

She sat inside what looked like an ordinary apartment.

Ethan did not ask where.

“Are you in danger?”

“I don't know.”

“From Evelyn?”

Mia looked away.

“She thinks she's protecting me.”

That phrase again.

Ethan almost closed his eyes.

“Do you want to leave?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell us where you are.”

“If I do, Vivian gets arrested.”

“Maybe she should.”

Mia stared.

“She raised Claire.”

“She also hid you from Claire.”

“I know.”

Mia’s anger flashed.

“You think I don't know what everybody did?”

Ethan let her speak.

Mia had learned the truth six months earlier.

Evelyn approached her outside college-prep tutoring.

Not with threats.

With records.

DNA.

Photographs.

Claire’s name.

Mia initially thought it was a scam.

Then tested herself.

Claire was her mother.

The Bennetts admitted the adoption had been private and strange.

They had been told Claire was unable to parent and voluntarily relinquished her.

They did not know Claire was told Mia died.

Laura Bennett cried for three days after learning.

Stephen wanted to contact Claire immediately.

Mia did not.

“Why?”

“Because I didn't know what I wanted.”

That answer sounded like the first sane thing anyone had said.

Mia had parents.

A life.

Memories.

Finding Claire did not erase them.

Evelyn kept pushing.

Showing documents.

Explaining Edward.

Vivian.

Bellweather.

Eventually Mia became angry.

Not only for herself.

For Claire.

For Helen Morgan.

For other children.

She agreed to help Evelyn gather evidence.

The staged chair photograph was supposed to be sent to Vivian.

Not Claire.

That changed everything.

“What?”

Mia nodded.

“The plan was to scare Vivian into admitting what she did.”

Evelyn told Mia they would create a fake kidnapping scenario.

Vivian would receive a photograph.

Message:

TELL CLAIRE THE TRUTH OR AMELIA DISAPPEARS AGAIN.

Mia agreed reluctantly.

But Evelyn sent it to Claire instead.

Then escalated.

Mia did not know until after the bedroom attack.

“How did you find out?”

“I saw the video.”

The edited clip.

Then news that Noah and Sophie were hospitalized.

Mia confronted Evelyn.

Evelyn said Claire had proven what kind of mother she was.

Mia slapped her.

Then ran.

She had been hiding in an apartment belonging to Vivian.

Ethan stared.

“Vivian is helping you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she finally told me everything.”

Mia turned the camera.

Vivian Holloway sat across the room.

Older.

Elegant.

Exhausted.

Not missing.

Hiding with the granddaughter she had helped erase.

Ethan’s anger surged.

“Put her on.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

“She knows where Evelyn is.”

“No, she doesn't.”

“She planted the cane.”

Mia looked confused.

“What cane?”

Ethan explained.

Vivian’s face changed off-camera.

Mia turned toward her.

“You went into the mansion?”

Vivian nodded.

Once.

She had received a message from someone claiming Claire found Amelia’s adoption papers and planned to destroy them.

Vivian panicked.

Entered the house.

Searched Claire’s room.

She never entered Sophie’s room.

Daniel confronted her.

That portion of the cane audio was real.

But she did not bring the cane.

It was already in the corridor.

Someone later moved it.

Evelyn.

Probably.

Vivian finally came on camera.

Her voice was small.

“I did unforgivable things.”

Ethan did not argue.

“But I did not tell Claire to hurt Sophie.”

“I know.”

Vivian looked surprised.

“I think Evelyn did.”

Vivian nodded.

Then Mia interrupted.

“You keep talking about me like I’m not here.”

Everyone stopped.

She was right.

Mia leaned toward the camera.

“I want the truth recorded.”

No negotiations.

No edited family version.

She wanted to speak directly to investigators with her adoptive parents present.

She wanted Claire informed she was alive.

But not allowed to contact her yet.

That hurt Claire when she heard.

It was still Mia’s right.

She wanted Vivian to surrender.

Vivian agreed.

Then Mia said:

“And I want Evelyn found before she decides hurting somebody else is justice.”

The FBI traced the apartment after Mia consented.

Vivian surrendered.

Mia entered protective custody temporarily.

The Bennetts flew in.

Claire learned Mia was safe.

She collapsed in her cell.

Not relief alone.

Grief.

Her daughter was alive.

And did not want to see her.

Claire whispered to her lawyer:

“She shouldn't.”

The lawyer asked:

“What?”

“She shouldn't see me.”

For the first time since the attack, Claire seemed to understand that saving Mia did not entitle her to a relationship.

Then the Bellweather records transfer began.

Martin moved the archive despite federal objections, claiming a court order required preservation.

Evelyn had predicted it.

The data path exposed an underground storage facility in Virginia.

Agents obtained a warrant.

Inside were thousands of sealed placement records.

Enough to unravel decades.

But one cabinet was empty.

Label:

ORIGINAL CONSENT MATERIAL — 1987–2012.

Somebody had removed the documents that could prove coercion.

Surveillance showed who.

Not Martin.

Not Vivian.

Not Evelyn.

Thomas Cole.

Ethan’s dead father.

The footage was eight years old.

Thomas had taken the originals.

Where?

Rachel’s note had one answer:

The person with the least power to gain.

But there was another person Rachel trusted.

Noah.

And Thomas had given Noah something before he died.

A wooden train chest.

Noah remembered it immediately.

May you like

The chest had been locked for six years.

And the key had vanished the night Thomas died.
